Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Kyle Ruth

Late Rally Falls Short in 91-84 Road Loss at Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The University of West Georgia men's basketball team traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina for a pivotal conference matchup against Queens University.

In the Wolves' last meeting with the Royals, West Georgia secured its first victory in the all-time series with a 74-66 win inside The Coliseum. That victory handed Queens its first conference loss of the season and snapped the Royals' seven-game winning streak.

Saturday's contest unfolded as an offensive battle from the opening tip. Matija Žužic set the tone early for the Wolves, scoring seven points in the first few minutes of action. Žužic finished the half with 10 points behind two three-pointers, providing an early spark off the bench. Josh Smith followed with an efficient first-half performance of his own, scoring nine points on perfect shooting in just 10 minutes. Kolten Griffin added seven first-half points, while Kenneth Chime contributed six points in nine minutes to help keep the Wolves within striking distance.

Despite the balanced scoring, West Georgia trailed 42-39 at halftime. Out of the break, the Wolves continued their offensive rhythm. Shelton Williams-Dryden, the ASUN's second-leading scorer, powered the second-half surge with 12 of his 14 total points coming after halftime. Smith remained aggressive, adding 11 more points in the final 20 minutes to finish with a team-high 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting in 25 minutes of action.

Žužic continued his strong play in the second half, finishing with a UWG career-high 14 points while going 6-7 from the free throw line. Chime delivered one of his most complete performances of the season, recording a career-high 14 points and a career-best 11 rebounds for a double-double. He dominated the offensive glass with seven offensive rebounds, helping the Wolves generate 14 second-chance points.

As a team, West Georgia shot an efficient 48.5 percent (32-66) from the field and 73.7 percent (14-19) from the free throw line, finishing with 84 points, one of the team's top offensive outputs of the season.

However, Queens matched that efficiency. After being limited to just two points in the previous meeting, Royals leading scorer Nasir Mann responded with 26 points and 10 rebounds on 10-14 shooting, including a perfect second half from the field. Avantae Parker added 15 points, with 12 coming after the break, as Queens placed four players in double figures and shot 51.7 percent overall.

Late in the game, the Wolves made one final push, holding Queens scoreless for the final three and a half minutes of play. Despite the defensive stand, the early second-half scoring surge by the Royals proved too much to overcome, as Queens secured the 91-84 victory on its home floor.

With the result, the Wolves conclude their second four-game road trip of the season and return to The Coliseum for the final two games of the regular season. West Georgia will host Lipscomb on Wednesday, February 25 at 7 p.m. as the Wolves look to close the regular season strong on their home court.
