Wolves Drop Game One of South Alabama Series

MOBILE, Ala, - West Georgia baseball was defeated 7-4 by South Alabama tonight in game one of the road series.

Opening the game with a grand slam by Anthony Cole, UWG (1-9) got off to a hot start tonight, but USA (7-3) would score seven unanswered runs after the Wolves' bats went cold and the team started making costly errors.

"We jumped out there, but we gave up, I think, 11 free passes. W
e walked guys, hit guys, had a couple errors, and you just can't give teams that many free base runners and expect to win," said head coach Jeff Smith "We've got to eliminate the mistakes. We can't play the scoreboard. We got to have some fight in us, and we've got to compete and get out there and take the game to them like we did in the first inning"

In his first at-bat since hitting a home run against No. 7 Auburn, Cole opened the road game crushing a grand slam in the first to put the Wolves 4-0 on South Alabama.

During the bottom of the first, USA responded with an RBI double to cut the Wolves' lead to 4-1. Remarkably, in the 12 innings that the Wolves have scored on the road this year (including this one), their opponents have responded with a run during the bottom of the frame nine times.

With the Jaguars' bats staying hot in the second, the hosts would lock the game at four apiece following a pair of base hit RBIs.

Two more innings would pass before a Jaguars single to right field drove in a baserunner to give the hosts their first lead of the night.

USA added to their tally with a solo home run in the seventh and a score from a UWG throwing error in the eighth, extending their lead to 7-4.

Continuing to stay cold in the batter's box since the second inning, UWG fell 7-4.

Maverick Torres was tagged with his first loss of the season. Pitching in a team-high 2.2 frames, Torres allowed one run and struck out three batters.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
