Regular Season Ends in Quadruple Overtime Loss at North Alabama

Wolves to Enter ASUN Tournament as Seven Seed

FLORENCE, Ala. - It took 60 minutes and four overtimes to decide a winner, but the 75th overall meeting between the West Georgia Wolves and the North Alabama Lions was an instant classic with UNA claiming a 118-107 quadruple overtime victory.

In a game that featured 22 ties and 38 lead changes, West Georgia (17-12, 10-8 ASUN) ran out of gas in a marathon affair on the road as North Alabama (16-13, 11-7 ASUN) outlasted the Wolves. The game also marked the most combined points ever scored in series history.

The loss set the Wolves as the ASUN's seven seed heading into next week's tournament while UNA claimed the six seed.

Five Wolves scored in double-figures with three of them eclipsing the 20-point marks. Sydne Tolbert and Asia Donald each had 24 to lead UWG while Jasmine Jones had 21.

A fourth Wolf barely missed out on a 20-point game as Destiny Jones scored 19 to go with a career-high 19 rebounds. Grace O'Gara had 12 points in the loss and dished out a game-high seven assists.

Both offenses were firing on all cylinders early, and it was West Georgia who had the early advantage at the game's first media. Fueled by eight points from Jasmine Jones right out of the gate, UWG forced an early timeout from UNA as the Wolves led 15-14 and had hit three of their first four threes in the opening five minutes of play.

The first quarter alone featured 16 lead changes, but by the end it was UNA who led 32-31. It was the highest opening quarter of the season for UNA, and the second-highest for UWG.

West Georgia created separation in the second quarter, outscoring UNA 20-13 and taking a 51-45 lead into the halftime locker room. At the break, UWG already had three scorers in double-figures, led by Asia Donald's 13 while Sydne Tolbert had 12 and Jasmine Jones had 11.

In the third quarter, Jasmine Jones hit a quick jumper that stretched the UWG advantage to nine. From there, UNA chipped away, eventually tying it midway through the period. It was more back-and-forth basketball over the remainder of the period with UNA leading by one by the end of the third.

To noone's surprise, the final quarter featured eight lead changes. UNA led by as much as six in the period, but UWG battled back and forced a tough jumper on the Lions' final possession in regulation and got a defensive rebound to give the Wolves a chance to win it.

UNA's defense clamped down and UWG was forced to attempt a game-winning three, and Grace O'Gara's three-pointer was blocked, sending the game to an overtime period.

West Georgia scored the first two baskets of the first overtime with Tolbert connecting on both. UNA roared back and went up three with a successful trip to the free throw line with 15 second remaining. That's when the Wolves turned to their sharp-shooter, Jasmine Jones, who knocked in a triple to tie it up and force a second OT.

Donald gave UWG an early lead in the second overtime, but neither team got much of an advantage. UNA tied things up at the 1:18 mark and neither team scored for the remainder of that period, setting up a third OT.

It was the Wolves who looked to be in control of the third overtime, scoring the first three baskets to go up 102-96 at the 3:27 mark. The Lions then scored six unanswered to tie it up, but a Destiny Jones and-one with 1:24 left put UWG back up three. It would stay there, at 105-102, until late in the period when Alexsandra Alvarado, who finished with a game-high 39, hit a three to tie it up, 105-105. Tolbert got a look at a potential game-winner, but alas a fourth overtime was on the way.

UWG seemed to run out of gas in the fourth overtime as UNA outscored the Wolves 13-2 to complete their season sweep of the Wolves.

The ASUN Tournament begins on Tuesday for UWG as the Wolves will travel to Jacksonville, Florida to take on North Florida. The game will tip at 5 p.m. from Swisher Gymnasium on the campus of Jacksonville University.
