UWG Shooting Woes Results in Home Loss

CARROLLTON, Ga. -  Despite West Georgia men's basketball taking 22 more shots than North Florida, the Ospreys grabbed a 81-73 win tonight in The Coliseum after the Pack recorded an in-conference season low shooting percentage.

Even with UWG (10-13, 4-7 ASUN) tallying a season-best 16-2 turnover ratio and taking over 20 more shots, the Ospreys' (6-18, 4-7 ASUN) 59 percent shooting to the Wolves' 35 percent shooting resulted in the visitors overpowering the Pack in the second half to secure their first-ever win in the series. UWG now leads the series 2-1.

Shelton Williams-Dryden's 17 points and 16 rebounds led the Wolves tonight. The Milwaukee native surpassed the 1000-point mark tonight, marking the sixth Wolf in history to achieve this feat in two seasons. UNF was led by Kamrin Oriol's 22 points.

Fueled by three-pointers from Kolten Griffin, Josh Smith and Brady Hardewig, UWG opened tonight's matchup jumping out to a 9-7 lead by the first media timeout.

Following the hot start from three, UWG missed seven consecutive shots from deep, allowing UNF to take a 18-15 advantage by the 10-minute mark with the ASUN scoring leader, Kamerin Oriol, pushing the UNF pace with six points.

Pulling down eight offensive rebounds, UWG added 13 second chance points to jump back out to a 30-28 advantage at the final media timeout of the half.

Trading scores the rest of the way, West Georgia held a 37-34 lead heading into the break. Kenneth Chime's eight points pushed the pace for UWG.

Out of halftime, JaVar Daniel recorded steals on three consecutive UNF possessions to keep the Wolves in front of the visitors.

North Florida clawed their way back to lock the game at 51-51 after the Pack continued to miss from deep. At the under 12-minute media timeout, UWG was 4-of-20 (20 percent) from three.

Despite only shooting 20 percent from beyond the arc, the Wolves continued to trust their shots. Coming out of the break, Griffin and Malcolm Noel would hit back-to-back threes to push the Wolves out in front 61-57 with under nine minutes remaining.

Similar to the end of the first half, neither team was able to get enough offense going to create a cushion. At the final media timeout, UNF held a tight 70-69 lead.

Following the timeout, the Ospreys drained back-to-back threes to extend its lead to 76-69 with under two minutes left.

With UNF continuing to hit its shots from deep and UWG unable to answer, the Ospreys took a 81-73 win.

The Wolves wrap up its three-game homestead taking on Jacksonville this Saturday (Feb. 7) at 2 p.m.
