CARROLLTON, Ga. – UWG softball dropped a pair of tough decisions on Sunday to wrap up a weekend full of softball in Carrollton.
West Georgia (2-4) fell in the first game of the day to Drexel (3-2) by a 5-2 count before dropping the final game to Austin Peay (3-2) by a final score of 11-7.
GAME ONE
A pair of home runs by Drexel's Kalea Calugay would have been the difference in a game that featured just four UWG hits. Calugay hit a two-run home run in the first and UWG got on the board in the first on a Jadyn Timmons RBI groundout.
Calugay added a solo shot in the fourth to stretch it to 4-1.
Jenna Samuel helped UWG cut into the deficit in the bottom half, driving home Ella Oswalt following a leadoff triple by the freshman.
Drexel added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to account for the fina margin.
Megan Waites had two of the Wolves four hits. Abigail Helms made her collegiate debut and pitched 6.1 innings and struck out five while allowing three earned runs.
GAME TWO
The ASUN Preseason Player of the Year Brie Howard got the Governors out to an early lead, slugging a three-run home run to highlight a six-run frame in the top of the first.
To their credit, the Wolves swung right back, using three hits and an APSU error to cut the deficit to three at 6-3. Jenna Samuel drove in one of the runs, and two scored on wild pitches.
In the second, UWG used a two-run home run from Zekylah Boyd and a solo shot from Ella Oswalt to tie the game at 6-6.
After a scoreless fourth, APSU's Katie Raper slammed a solo shot that put the Govs back on top by a one-run margin.
Kristen Fowler tied it up with a sac fly in the fifth, but the Govs added two runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings.
Boyd led the Wolves with two of the team's six hits. Cacie Cutright pitched in relief of Delaney Hoyle, and tossed 127 pitches over 6.1 innings.
