UWG Baseball Overpowered by the GSU Panthers

CARROLLTON, Ga. -  West Georgia baseball was defeated 8-2 by the Georgia State Panthers today at Cole Field.

Held to three hits, UWG (5-16, 2-1 ASUN) could not get enough going offensively to keep pace with the Panthers (11-11, 0-3 SBC). Wolves now lead the all-time series 12-6-1.

The Panthers out of Atlanta were the first to strike today. In the second frame, a single to left field allowed a base runner to take home and put GSU up 1-0.

During the bottom of the second, center fielder Brady McDevitt lined a base hit through the middle, driving Fano Cruz home from second to lock the game at 1-1.

Over the next two innings, GSU pushed its lead to 5-1 following an RBI triple, a base hit RBI, a sacrifice fly RBI and a walk with the bases loaded that brought a Panther home.

Coming off a scoreless fifth frame, the Panthers extended their advantage to 7-1 with a home run over the right field wall.

During the seventh, McDevitt drove in another Wolf with a double to right field, cutting the GSU lead to 7-2. With runners in scoring position and zero outs, it looked like the Wolves were going to add to their tally, but the Panthers escaped the jam with a pair of punchouts and a fly out in foul territory.

GSU added one more run in the ninth before going on to win 8-2.

Redshirt sophomore Gunnar Plante was tagged with the loss. In 1.2 frames, Plante struck out a career-high three batters and conceded three earned runs.

West Georgia goes back on the road to take on Stetson University in a three-game ASUN series this weekend. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m.
