UWG Seals Series Victory with Strong Pitching and Productive Bats

CHARLOTTE, NC -  West Georgia rolled past Queens University 7-1 this Saturday to secure their first road ASUN series victory of the season.

Backed by another great start from Lex Kenny, combined with the Wolves' bats staying hot from yesterday, UWG (8-19, 5-3 ASUN) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, earning its second straight victory over Queens (6-19, 2-6 ASUN) with a series finale set for Sunday.

"Lex Kenny, he was big today for us. He pitched well and he's going to do that every time out. It's huge for us to get six innings out of our starter because that minimizes what we need to do out there." stated head coach Jeff Smith. "I'm excited about the series win and was excited about the way Kenny and Josh Lanum and Davis Williams came in and pitched. I think our offense today came out with a plan and for the most part we executed."

In six innings, Kenny struck out a career-high seven batters and conceded just five hits and one run to secure his fourth consecutive win on the mound.

Carrying the momentum of yesterday's 10-9 come-from-behind win, UWG opened game two jumping out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a sacrifice fly from Mason Cooper and a base hit RBI from Patrick McCullough.

Kenny continued the momentum on the mound by striking out three batters in a row to get out of the first frame.

Coming off a scoreless second inning, Queens cut the UWG advantage to 2-1 with an RBI single through the left side, marking the last time they would score today.

The Wolves responded in the fifth with a two-run homer by Landon Weidner to push UWG to a 4-1 lead over the Royals. Still in the fifth, Andon Lewis' single to left field allowed the base runner to reach home and extend the advantage to 5-1.

Capitalizing on a pair of costly errors by the Royals pitcher and a UWG base hit, the first three batters of the sixth inning got on. Coming off his first homer of the season in his latest at-bat, Weidner drove two Wolves home with a single down the left line to put West Georgia up 7-1.

Taking over the pitching duties in the seventh, Josh Lanum and Davis Williams closed out the game holding the hosts to a six-run deficit. West Georgia won 7-1

UWG closes out the road series with Queens tomorrow at 12 p.m. A live stats link is tagged on the West Georgia baseball schedule.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
-In two innings, Lanum struck out two batters and gave up only one hit.
-Williams struck out one batter in his lone frame.
-Led by McCullough's four hits, Cole, Lewis, Weidner and Blane Schmitt followed with two each.
-Cole and McCullough both have recorded back-to-back multi-hit games.
-Weidner tallied a season-high four RBIs.
-UWG outhit Queens 14-7.
-With the Wolves claiming the series with today's win, UWG now sits with a 2-1 record in ASUN series this year.

Talking about today's batters, Smith said, "I thought Patrick McCullough swung the bat well. Blane Schmitt did an outstanding job. Anthony Cole did well too. You know, we got some guys that are swinging the bat pretty good. When our hitters have zone  discipline and don't chase out of the zone, we're going to put up some hits and we're going to put up some runs."
