Midweek Pitching Duel Ends in 3-2 Loss

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia baseball was defeated 3-2 by Kennesaw State on Tuesday in the final home midweek matchup of the season.

With both teams' pitching preventing runs from crossing the plate, the difference in Tuesday's duel was the pair of UWG (11-30, 8-10 ASUN) errors and a 9-8 hit advantage in the Owls' (18-19, 7-11 CUSA) favor.

"I saw some good things with our pitchers today. They threw the ball well. We didn't help ourselves with the errors. That hurt us because they led to them scoring some runs," said head coach Jeff Smith. "There's positives to take out of today's game. You know, Gabe Wuerth got hit in the face down in Jacksonville, so he was out for a few games. He came in here today and got two hits and they had to rob him of a home run to save the game. I'm proud of the guys, how they competed and, you know, looking forward to this weekend."

KSU kicked off today's scoring in the second frame with an RBI single to right field, giving the Owls an early advantage.

With Wolves on the corners and one out, UWG appeared poised to strike, but a 6-4-3 double play turned by KSU quickly erased the threat and allowed the visitors to escape the third inning still in front.

Backed by solid pitching and clean defense by both teams, the score remained at 1-0 in the Owls' favor until the UWG defensive dam broke in the seventh. With a pair of runners on, an RBI single and a UWG throwing error pushed the KSU lead to 3-0.

Held scoreless through the opening seven frames, second baseman Gabe Wuerth crushed a solo home run over the right field wall to cut the Kennesaw lead to 3-1 in the eighth. Still in the eighth, UWG dashed the visitors' advantage to 3-2 following a KSU throwing error by their pitcher.

With one man on in the bottom of the ninth, it looked like a UWG hit was going to clear the right field fence until an Owl jumped up and stole the would-be walk off homer at the wall.

Wolves fell 3-2.

Gunnar Plante was tagged with the loss. In 2.2 frames, he allowed one earned run and struck out three batters.

The Wolves stay at Cole Field to host Stetson University this weekend in a three-game ASUN series. First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m.
