Wolves Earn ASUN Series Win Over FGCU

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia baseball grabbed a 9-6 game two win over Florida Gulf Coast this Friday at Cole Field, securing the ASUN series victory with a finale set for tomorrow at 10 a.m.

Thanks to a three-run homer courtesy of Hank Smith, UWG (10-21, 7-4 ASUN) created an early advantage over FGCU (19-11, 5-5 ASUN), but the Pack wasn't out of the woods yet. With the Eagles storming back to make it a one-run contest, the Wolves had to capitalize on an explosive sixth frame to overcome the visitors.

"I felt like our guys came out and they were ready to go. We talked about it yesterday, we can't take the foot off the throttle," said head coach Jeff Smith. "We got to keep doing what we've been doing this weekend. Luke Ridley came out and gave us a good start, and then Davis Williams and Josh Lanum finished the game there. That's huge for us." See the full post-game press conference with Smith below.

FGCU opened game two jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first frame thanks to back-to-back home runs off the UWG scoreboard.

Continuing to stay hot from yesterday, West Georgia cut the visitors' lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI single courtesy of designated hitter Andon Lewis.

Keeping the UWG momentum alive, Smith whacked a three-run homer over the right field fence to give the Wolves a 4-2 advantage in the second frame. This marked the catcher's first home run of the season.

With two outs tagged against the Wolves, outfielder Blake Bradford snuck a single past the FGCU shortstop, driving a runner home and extending the UWG lead to 5-2 in the fourth.

For the second straight frame, it looked like FGCU was going to score after loading the bases with two outs tagged against them. Luckily for the Wolves, Blane Schmitt put the Eagles' scoring attack to bed with an excellent play at shortstop to maintain the three-run lead.

Loading the bases for the third consecutive frame, Florida Gulf Coast finally capitalized on the scoring situation with a walk that brought an Eagle home. Still in the sixth, FGCU dashed the Wolves' lead to 5-4 with a sacrifice fly.

With the Eagles closing in on West Georgia's advantage, the Wolves needed timely offense to stop the FGCU scoring run. In the bottom of the sixth, first baseman Fano Cruz gave the Wolves the offensive juice they needed with a two-run RBI double to center field. Still in the sixth, Lewis lined an RBI single up the middle, ballooning the Wolves' advantage to 8-4.

UWG continued their scoring attack in the seventh with a sacrifice fly from Blake Bradford.

FGCU responded with two more runs in the eighth with a homer, but were stopped short of staging the full comeback. UWG won 9-6.

In five frames, starting pitcher Luke Ridley recorded five strikeouts and allowed four earned runs to grab his second win of the season. He now posts a 2-1 record.

UWG and the Eagles return to Cole Field on Saturday to close out the ASUN series. Due to incoming inclement weather, first pitch is now set for 10 a.m. Because of the time change, streaming may not be available. Live coverage links are tagged on the baseball schedule.
