MARTIN, Tenn. - Day one of the Skyhawk Classic ended in a 3-1 loss for West Georgia volleyball (4-7) to host, UT Martin (3-6).

The Skyhawks got off to a hot start by taking the opening two sets, but the Wolves would battle to claim a third-set win and force UTM to claim a fourth-set victory by going past 25 points.

Outside hitter Brooke McCall recorded a team-high 20 points from 14 kills. This marks the second time this season she recorded 20 or more points. Middle blocker Maddy Kirmer tallied a team-high four blocks. She has now recorded at least one block in all 11 matches this season.

SET ONE
Marked by five ties and two lead changes, set one of the UWG vs UTM match was a battle to the end. With Valiree Schmus and McCall each scoring three early points for UWG, the Wolves stayed on the Skyhawks tails down 13-12. Over the next few volleys, UWG would make a handful of attacking errors, allowing the hosts' lead to grow as big as 21-16. After a kill from Grace-Blythe Cornett and a UTM attack error, Desha Van Veldhuizen recorded back-to-back aces to cut the deficit to 21-20. Unfortunately, the Wolves would be unable to overtake, falling 25-23.

SET TWO
Carrying the momentum of the first set, UTM opened the second jumping out to a 7-2 lead. UWG responded to cut the deficit down to 12-8 but began running out of gas. The Wolves would fall 25-15.

SET THREE
Building on three UWG blocks and a kill from McCall, the Wolves kicked off the third set grabbing a 10-5 lead. West Georgia would cherish some breathing room until a 4-2 scoring swing had the Skyhawks nipping at the Wolves' heels down 17-15. After trading a few points, UWG ended the set by going on a 4-0 run with three points coming from Schmus to win 25-20.

SET FOUR
Like with set three, the Wolves open the fourth jumping out to an early advantage. Up 8-4, UWG would see their lead erased following a 6-2 UTM run. The Skyhawks' scoring attack continued, resulting in UWG falling behind 16-12, but the Pack continued to fight. Thanks to a Cornett kill and consecutive UTM attack errors, UWG slashed its deficit down to 16-15. After going down 20-16, the Wolves again battled back to knot the game at 20-20. Back-to-back McCall kills and an error by UTM had the Wolves up 23-22, but the Skyhawks did just enough to claim a 27-25 win.
