One of the first additions to Steve Englehart's staff after taking the reins of UWG football in December of 2025 was Dan Owen as the Wolves' defensive coordinator.
Owen comes to UWG after four seasons as Englehart's DC at Presbyterian, and is coming off a season in which the Blue Hose defense was one of the top units in the country. In 2025, PC ranked second in total defense (272.6/gm) and third in scoring defense (16.2/gm). Additionally, the Blue Hose defense led the country in first downs allowed.Â
His defense has recorded two shutouts during his tenure: a dominant showing against Virginia-Lynchburg in 2024, allowing only 72 total yards and -4 rushing yards. His first conference shutout came in 2025 against Morehead State, a 41–0 rout where the defense forced five turnovers, allowed zero passing yards in the first quarter, and held the Eagles to just 277 total yards. Six of Morehead's nine first-half drives ended in either an interception, fumble, or turnover on downs.Â
Prior to his stint in Clinton, Owen spent time at Florida Atlantic and East Carolina that followed his time at Florida Tech under Englehart.Â
Owen spent five seasons on staff at Florida Tech and coached on both sides of the ball as well as serving as the Panthers' special teams coordinator. In 2015 & 2016 Manny Abad was selected First Team All-Gulf South Conference. Florida Tech reached the NCAA Division II Playoffs in just its fourth year of existence with an 8-3 record. During the 2016 season, the defense ranked 22nd in scoring defense with 20.0 points per game. In 2017, his special teams unit blocked five kicks and averaged 11.1 yards per return.Â
As a player, he spent time at Los Angeles Valley College and Florida Tech with Englehart as his head coach at the latter. Â
He received the Jason Leonard Coaches Award that is given to a player that exemplified what it meant to be an LA Valley Monarch by his commitment, leadership and attitude. He also received the AAA award for best demonstrating commitment to his academics, ability and attitude.Â
Owen and his wife, Katie, have one daughter, Andie.Â
