Will Patterson joined the UWG staff in the spring of 2019, and has served in multiple capacities since arriving in Carrollton. Once again in 2023, Patterson will oversee the running backs as well as as his duties as Director of Football Operations.
After coaching tight ends and full backs for two seasons, Patterson has excelled leading the running back corps, highlighted by Jaxton Carson's record-breaking season in 2022 where he set a single-season UWG record for rushing touchdowns with 20 as he was named All-Gulf South Conference, All-Super Region 2, and All-American. In 2021, Patterson's group of back featured Jace Jordan who under Patterson's tutelage rushed for 10 touchdowns in his senior season. Jordan went on to sign an undrafted free agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks and played in the Canadian Football League for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Before coming to UWG, Patterson spent six seasons helping to build the football program at Mercer in Macon, Ga. He coached tight ends in all six seasons, guiding Robert Brown to All-Conference status as a freshman in 2013, Patterson’s first year as the Mercer tight ends coach.
As a player, Patterson earned four letters at Rhodes College, and started for three seasons at right guard for the Lynx. He was named All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference as a senior in 2010 and was also the team’s long snapper on extra points. He graduated from Rhodes with a Bachelor of Science in Business in 2011 and worked in the fall of 2011 as a strength and conditioning coach at the University of Alabama-Birmingham
In 2012, Patterson landed his first full-time role, taking on the role of offensive line coach at Eagles Landing Christian Academy in McDonough, Ga. After a solid season of coaching at the high school level, Patterson took on a graduate assistant position at Mercer, coaching tight ends. He earned his Master’s of Business Administration at Mercer.
Patterson is a native of Macon, Ga., and is married to the former Sara Walsh and the couple has a daughter, Ellie that they welcomed in June 2022.
