Football teams that play physical and succeed on the field all have a common thread: a top-notch strength and conditioning program. The UWG Wolves are no exception, and for the past decade the Wolves have been blessed to have Master Strength and Conditioning Coach Monte Curtis on board as UWG’s Head Strength and Conditioning Coach.
Since Curtis came to West Georgia, the Wolves have been bigger, strong, faster, and generally in better shape than their counterparts. From 2014-20, UWG football posted more than 50 victories, won two NCAA Division II Super Region 2 titles, made two trips to the NCAA Semifinals, and captured a Gulf South Conference crown.
The seeds of that success were sown in the weight room. The weights, plus a unique conditioning regimen have helped make the Wolves one of the strongest, most physical teams anywhere at the Division II level.
Curtis took over the weight room and the conditioning regimen for the Wolves in 2011. He came to Carrollton from Division I Southern Mississippi where he was the Associate Head Coach. At USM he was in charge of the strength program for both the baseball and softball programs, while assisting with the Golden Eagles’ football team. The baseball team reached the College World Series for the first time in school history and won the conference championship.
Prior to his three seasons at Southern Miss, Curtis was Associate Director of the Strength and Conditioning program at Division I Rice University. He was in charge of Strength and Conditioning for a baseball program that had 10 years of continuous success. The team won 10 straight Conference Championships, made five trips to Omaha for the College World Series winning the National Championship in 2003, all while assisting with the football team.  Curtis was also integral in the success of the women's track and field team that claimed the National Title in 4x400 meter relay.
Curtis has a career total of 20 conference championships and two National Championships.
He also was Director of Sports Performance at Velocity Sports Performance, under the direction of world renowned speed and movement coach, Loren Seagrave.
As a collegiate performer, Curtis began his career as a linebacker at Arkansas before transferring to Central Arkansas. At UCA, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and completed work on a Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology.
Curtis is a member and holds certifications from four prestigious organizations. These include the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (MSCC, SCCC), National Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCS), USA Track and Field, and USA Weightlifting.
