Michael Cooney brings passion, experience and a treasure trove of institutional knowledge to his role as the Director of Development for Athletics/Associate Athletic Director for Development at the University of West Georgia. With more than 30 years of athletic coaching experience, he is affectionately known as “Coach Cooney'' by many and is seen as a constant in this space. Given the depth and breadth of relationships that span across both the university and the community, Michael is able to leverage this connectivity to facilitate gifts that benefit both UWG and UWG Athletics. Â
Â
Michael enjoys resource development work because of the impact that can be seen from those gifts and support. The engagement and generosity motivates him to work closely with donors on these types of powerful transformations.

A native of Spokane, Washington, Michael is a graduate of Gonzaga University where he earned his B.B.A. His wife, Sherry, is the former cheerleading coach for UWG, where she built a program that has claimed many UCA Division II titles and is still among the nation’s elite. The Cooneys have three children: daughters, Cailah and Samantha, and son, Joe.
