Stump Mitchell

  • Title
    Running Backs

Head football Coach Joel Taylor announced the addition of Stump Mitchell as the Wolves’ running backs coach prior to the 2025 season.

A former NFL running back, and a veteran coach with 30 years of experience, including two decades as an NFL assistant, Mitchell returns to the collegiate game for the first time since 2012 following a five-year stint as the Cleveland Browns running backs coach.

Following a 10-year NFL playing career, Mitchell began his coaching career in 1992 with the San Antonion Riders of WLAF before two years as a head coach at the high school level. Mitchell broke into the college coaching ranks at Morgan State in 1995 and then transitioned to the NFL as the running backs coach for the Seattle Seahawks, a position he would hold for nine seasons.

Mitchell would then spend two seasons with the Washington Redskins before going back to the college game as Southern University’s head coach from 2010-2012.

It was back to the NFL following that stint as Mitchell would then serve as running backs coach for the Arizona Cardinals (2013-16), the New York Jets (2017-28), and then his most recent stint with the Browns (2019-23).

As a player, Mitchell was drafted in the ninth round in the 1981 draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. He was with the Cardinals until the 1989 season before his final season in the NFL with the Chiefs in 1990. His best season came in 1995 when he rushed for 1,006 yards and seven touchdowns while adding 502 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Mitchell rushed for nearly 5,000 yards in his career and scored 32 touchdowns. Mitchell is second all-time in all-purpose yards for the Cardinals with 11,985, trailing only Larry Fitzgerald.

A native of Saint Mary’s, Georgia, Mitchell played collegiately at The Citadel where he was a two-time All-Conference selection, the Conference Player of the Year, and an AP All-American while also competing in track and field.
