Jason Carmichael has served as the University of West Georgia Director of Athletics since April 2021.
As director of athletics, Carmichael provides executive leadership, exceptional operational management, and strategic direction in the pursuit of excellence for UWG’s approximately 400 student-athletes in 15 varsity sports, as well as a nationally recognized and award-winning UWG Cheerleading program.
Over the last four years Carmichael has sought to bring a refined focus on outcomes within UWG Athletics. Goals and enhanced expectations have been put into place around competitive excellence, undergirded by a focus on comprehensive success on and off the field of competition.
In 2023, after completing an analysis in partnership with the University System of Georgia, UWG announced a bold stop forward into the ranks of DI. UWG just successfully completed its first year of the reclassification process.
Whether Division II or now, Division I, UWG Athletics has sought to align itself closely with UWG’s Strategic Plan. The efforts of the department align particularly well with UWG’s Strategic Priorities of Relevance, Competitiveness, and Placemaking.
Carmichael has been consistently active within the industry within various committees and initiatives. He currently serves on both the Division II Athletic Director’s Association (D2 ADA) Board of Directors and the NCAA’s Football Rules Committee. Previously, Carmichael has served on the NCAA DII Women’s Soccer National Committee and participated in endeavors such as the D2 ADA Mentor/Mentee program.
A former basketball coach, Carmichael has served as a Director of Athletics at a total of five institutions, including two other Division II institutions. Prior to arriving in Carrollton, Carmichael was the Director of Athletics at Cal State East Bay from 2017-2021. Before joining CSUEB, he served as the Director of Athletics at Western State Colorado University.
Carmichael was raised in Arkansas and worked as a coach and administrator in the state before trekking west. He earned his bachelor's degree in education with an emphasis in kinesiology from Harding University and a master's degree in physical education, health, and recreation from Emporia State University.
Carmichael and his wife, Erin, have four children: daughter McKenna, and sons Brady, Rylan, and Keegan.
