Defense Shines in First Scrimmage

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The defense took center stage on Saturday morning in the first scrimmage of the 2019 season for head coach David Dean and his West Georgia squad. The scrimmage closed out a string of 13 consecutive days with a practice for the team, as the Wolves took Sunday off in their first rest day of Fall Camp 2019.

"I think the defense definitely won the day," said Dean. "Our offense did have some good individual plays to point, but I'm really pleased with the way that our defense is getting on and off the field."

The first score of the day came courtesy of a solid strike from Willie Candler to Thomas Lester. The ball was early to Lester, but the senior was able to keep his concentration and haul in a 25-yard pass that got the offense moving. Rajaez Mosley picked up a big third down on the drive and Omar Cervantes finished things off with a 43-yard field goal.

The defense responded quickly, as sophomore cornerback Jalen Harrell delivered a hit on the very next drive. The ball popped directly into the waiting arms of Devonte Matthews, who took it 23 yards to paydirt for a defensive touchdown. Matthews and senior safety Mike Miller each had interceptions in the scrimmage, with Miller returning his 27 yards before stepping out of bounds inside the 20.

Touchdown Plays in the Scrimmage
Tim McClain with a 1-yard plunge
Chauncey Williams with a 1-yard touchdown run
Garrett Bass connected with John Hurst for a 37-yard score

West Georgia has three more weeks of practice before the season opener against Catawba on September 7 in North Carolina. The Wolves will play in front of a home crowd for the first time on September 21, taking on Albany State at 7 p.m. on Family & Friends Night at University Stadium.

Season tickets are still available in the reserved chairback section, priced at $100 for all five games of the 2019 season. Fans may also purchase a Gulf South Conference pack of tickets for $35, allowing for general admission to each of the GSC Games this season, including the Homecoming Game on October 19 against West Florida and the November 16 contest against Valdosta State.
