CARROLLTON, Ga. – The 2020 Virtual WESTPY Awards continues with the announcement of the Women's Strength of the Pack Award on May 26, 2020. This award goes to a student-athlete who showed dominance in a single game, a series of games, or throughout the course of the season. This year's awards are presented by Advantage Office Solutions and the Georgia Army National Guard. The winner of the Alpha for this year's Strength of the Pack Award is Morgan Goree from the softball program.
Goree, a senior from Senoia, Georgia was as dominant in the circle as anyone in the Gulf South Conference this season. She allowed one hit or less in six of 14 appearances in the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season and struck out 98 batters in 63 innings and had a 1.78 ERA.
Her most dominant performance was a 10-inning complete game with 13 strikeouts in a win over perennial power West Florida. In that game, Goree allowed just five hits with one unearned run. Goree also threw a no-hitter against Montevallo while striking out 12, but took a loss thanks to defensive errors.
The right-hander also had a one-hitter against Shorter, pitching six innings and striking out 11.
Goree's 98 strikeouts were good for 10th among Division II pitchers across the country while her strikeouts per seven innings of 10.9 ranked fifth in the country.
