Carrollton, GA - UWG sophomore kicker #
Davis Brackett# kicked three field goals Saturday against Saint Augustine's, but none bigger than the 35-yarder as time expired, lifting the West Georgia Wolves to a 23-21 victory in the final non-conference matchup of the year.
After leading for much of the game, it all came down to Brackett's strong right leg after the Falcons went up 21-20 with just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
The first drive of the game was a reminder of last week, as Saint Augustine's marched down the field, reaching the Wolves' seven yard line in seven plays. But on the seventh play, SAC running back Dennis Mathis fumbled and UWG corner #
Kelly Dawsey# pounced, giving UWG the ball at the 12.
West Georgia mounted a drive in response, moving right down the field on the legs of running back #Quatavius Jones#. The sophomore back rushed four times for 32 yards in the march as the Wolves reached the SAC 19 before a pair of penalties forces UWG to attempt a 47-yard field goal. Brackett's attempt fell short, giving the ball back to the Falcons.
The Falcons moved into UWG territory when the Wolves' defense stepped up again. #
Drek Matthews# batted a pass from SAC quarterback Teddy Bacote directly into the waiting arms of #
Jenoris Darby#.
UWG quarterback #
Emmanuel Taylor# took full advantage, moving his team quickly back down the field. The West Georgia signal-caller completed 2-of-2 passes for 51 yards on the drive that stalled inside the team, resulting in a 21-yard field goal from Brackett and a 3-0 lead for the Wolves.
Saint Augustine's responded with an immediate score, a 60-yard strike from Bacote to Ty Laughinghouse, putting the Falcons up 7-3.
After a pair of stalled drives from each team, the Wolves took over at the 50. On the first play, #Denarius Appling# broke free for a 37-yard gain, putting West Georgia back into striking distance. Taylor completed a pass to French for 10 yards, followed by an aerial assault from #
James Kennebrew#, as the senior was hit in mid-air, flipping into the end zone for the first UWG touchdown of the day.
That would close out the scoring for the first half, as the Wolves went into the locker room with a slim 10-7 advantage.
Things looked bleak for the Wolves after the break, as SAC held West Georgia to a 3-and-out on the first series, then scored on a 62-yard touchdown from Bacote to Brian Richards, giving the Falcons a 14-10 advantage.
After a strange kickoff that gave West Georgia the ball at the SAC 27, the next drive was the Kennebrew show, as the senior rushed four times for 27 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown scamper, giving the lead back to UWG for good.
The two teams exchanged punts before the Wolves scored again, this time on a 41-yard field goal from Brackett with very little time gone in the fourth quarter. On the ensuing drive, the UWG defense wasted little time in returning the ball to Taylor and the offense, as Dawsey stepped in front of a pass and tipped the ball to #
Manny Rodriguez#, who hauled in his first pick of the season.
West Georgia's offense went three-and-out, setting up a monster drive from the Falcons. SAC marched 90 yards in 20 plays, with the final eight plays coming within 20 yards of the UWG goal line. The Wolves defense looked as though it had completed a goal line stand on fourth down, but was called for holding, giving Saint Augustine's new life.
The defense held tough on the first two plays before the Falcons were called for pass interference, pushing them back to the 18. Dawsey knocked the first pass down, but on 4th-and-18, Bacote complete an 18-yard strike to Jamian Smith, giving the Falcons a 21-20 advantage with 2:21 remaining.
But Taylor and the UWG offense took things in stride and marched right back down the field, setting up Brackett's 31-yard game-winner as time expired.
The win moves the Wolves to 4-2 on the season, the best start for a UWG squad since the 2001 season, when West Georgia started the year 7-1 and finished with an 8-3 record.
For the fourth time this season, the Wolves rushed for more than 200 yards, picking up 227 yards on the ground against the Falcons. Jones led the UWG contingent with a career-high 89 yards on 19 carries. Kennebrew added 11 carries for 61 yards and a pair of scores.
Taylor was 13-of-27 through the air for 190 yards, with four of those passes finding #
V.J. Hunt# for 74 yards. The Wolves 417 yards of offense was the most on the year and the 227 yards rushing was the second-highest total of the season.
A trio of true freshmen stood out on the day, as #
Teddy Lawrence# led the way with 10 tackles on the afternoon. #
Amir Mustafaa# and #
Tory Slater# each had a sack on the afternoon to aid the cause.
West Georgia's home slate continues next Thursday as the Wolves play host to 22nd-ranked West Alabama at University Stadium in the Gulf South Conference opener for UWG on the GSC-TV Live Game of the Week.
