Football Gameweek: The West Alabama Game

Carrollton, GA - Gulf South Conference play is here for UWG football and the program is at its highest point in a decade as the Wolves play host to the GSC-TV Live Game of the Week against West Alabama on Thursday evening at University Stadium.

Six games into the 2011 campaign and the Wolves are 4-2 after Davis Brackett's field goal as time expired against Saint Augustine's Saturday propelled West Georgia to a 23-21 victory. The 4-2 record is the best start after six games for UWG since the 2001 season, when West Georgia started the season 7-1 and finished at 8-3 overall.

For the fourth time this season, the Wolves rushed for more than 200 yards, picking up 227 yards on the ground against the Falcons. Jones led the UWG contingent with a career-high 89 yards on 19 carries. Kennebrew added 11 carries for 61 yards and a pair of scores.

Junior quarterback Emmanuel Taylor was 13-of-27 through the air for 190 yards, with four of those passes finding V.J. Hunt for 74 yards. The Wolves 417 yards of offense was the most on the year and the 227 yards rushing was the second-highest total of the season.

A trio of true freshmen stood out on the day, as Teddy Lawrence led the way with 10 tackles on the afternoon. Amir Mustafaa and Tory Slater each had a sack on the afternoon to aid the cause.

Taylor moved into the team lead in rushing on the season in the game with 318 total yards on the ground in his first season at West Georgia. He has accounted for the bulk of the UWG scoring with seven rushing and three passing scores for the Wolves. He has completed 72-of-129 passes on the year for 767 yards.

He has three targets that have at least 100 yards receiving this season, led by Hunt, who has 16 receptions for 182 yards and a touchdown. That score was a huge one for the Wolves, as it was the game-winner in West Georgia's close victory over Miles the last time West Georgia was on television.

Denarius Appling is second on the team in receiving with 14 catches for 172 yards on the year. He is still one of the most dangerous men in the nation in open space, which he has proven with three punt returns for touchdowns on the year. His lone receiving score was a 52-yarder against Henderson State in the Homecoming game.

The third target is sophomore Bobby Burum, who has 10 catches for 155 yards and a score on the year. His touchdown also came against Henderson State on a slant from six yards out.

The SAC game also showed an emerging force in the backfield for West Georgia. With one senior on the sideline and another hobbled, sophomore running back Quatavius Jones stepped up huge for the Wolves last week. He had 19 carries for 89 yards against the Falcons, averaging 4.7 yards per carry.

But senior James Kennebrew wasn't too hobbled, as he had 11 carries for 61 yards and two touchdowns, including one where he went airborne and flipped into the end zone.

Defensively, the Wolves have been a turnover forcing machine in the last two games, forcing nine turnovers against Harding and Saint Augustine's combined. Against the Bison two weeks ago, UWG had two defensive scores, a fumble recovery by Drek Matthews and an interception return by Waylon Kimble.

The Wolves have six interceptions on the season, including a pair last week from two senior safeties. Jenoris Darby and Manny Rodriguez both had a pick last week, stopping a drive by the Falcons and giving the ball back to Taylor and the UWG offense.

Darby is the leading tackler on the season for the Wolves with 38 stops to his credit on the year. Linebacker Bobby Liggins is an expert at creating havoc in the opposing backfield, as he leads the team with 8.5 tackles for a loss on the year.

The game marks the fifth time that University Stadium has been the host for the GSC-TV Live Game of the Week. West Georgia is 2-2 thus far in those contests.
