UWG Football Preview: The Delta State Game

Carrollton, GA - Week 7 will provide just as many storylines as did Week 6, as the Wolves host the 9th-ranked Delta State Statesmen, a team that has been ranked in the top-25 throughout the 2014 season, but just moved into the top-10 after a 35-20 home victory over Shorter this past Thursday evening on the GSC-TV Live Game of the Week. Saturday's game is set to kick off in University Stadium at 2 p.m., and can be heard on KISS 102.7 locally and through the portal at Gradick Communications online.

* The West Georgia Wolves come into the seventh week off the 2014 season with plenty to prove, as the Wolves suffered their first defeat of the year this past Saturday on the road at the hands of the Valdosta State Blazers, falling 40-6.

* The Wolves are coached by Will Hall, who is in his first season at West Georgia. He has an overall record of 30-12 in his fourth year as a head coach. Delta State is coached by Todd Cooley, who is in his second year in Cleveland with a record of 12-4.

* West Georgia comes into the game with a 5-1 record on the year and a 1-1 spot in Gulf South Conference play. DSU is 5-0 on the year and 3-0 in conference play with GSC victories over Florida Tech, Valdosta State and Shorter.

* West Georgia will look to rebound from a tough loss where the defense gave up the most yards in a single game this season and the offense produced the least amount of yardage of the year as well. Despite a rough outing, the Wolves are outscoring teams by a 31.2-14.2 margin, outgaining opponents by more than 90 yards per game.

* Scouting the UWG offense will be a challenge for any opposing defensive coordinator, as the Wolves, as West Georgia has rushed for 1,446 yards on the year and has passed for 846 yards. But UWG has scored 23 touchdowns on the year, with 11 rushing scores and 12 through the air.

* This week's matchup will feature the top offense in the Gulf South Conference against one of the best in the conference on defense. The Statesmen have been putting Playstation-worthy numbers up throughout the year on teams, averaging 547.6 yards per game of total offense, while the Wolves are giving up just 292.0 yards per game. DSU averages 375 yards per game through the air, while UWG is giving up just 149 passing yards per game.
