Football Preview: The West Alabama Game

Carrollton, GA - Of all the Gamedays at University Stadium, 32 in all, this Saturday might be the single biggest to this point, as RA-Lin Field will be the spot for a game between two ranked opponents for the first time in its six-year run.

* With two wins in University Stadium this year, the Wolves are now 17-15 in the venue. Both home games thus far have set a new type of standard in the stadium, as the win over Mars Hill in the opener moved UWG above .500 on RA-Lin Field for the first time ever, then the shutout over Johnson C. Smith marked the first shutout victory at University Stadium.

* The Wolves are coached by Will Hall, who is in his first season at West Georgia. He has an overall record of 29-11 in his fourth year as a head coach. West Alabama is coached by Brett Gilliland, who is in his first year with the Tigers.

* Something has to give this week, as the matchup features the 12th-best defense in the nation agaisnt the run (UWG) against the ninth-best rushing offense in the nation (UWA). The Tigers average 283.5 yards per game on the ground, and the Wolves are allowing just 81.5 yards per game rushing.

* West Georgia running back Seth Hinsley has put his name among the best ever in Carrollton, but he continues to get stronger by the week. Last week against Clark Atlanta, Hinsley rushed 14 times for 105 yards and had his first multi-score game of the year with two touchdowns. Hinsley now has 12 career touchdowns on the ground, good for 13th all-time at UWG. It was the fourth 100-yard game of his career.

* The UWG defense will have it's biggest test of the season this Saturday, as the Tigers are the third-best scoring team in the Gulf South Conference, averaging a GSC second-best 470.8 yards per game on the year. The Tigers have scored 21 touchdowns this season, while the West Georgia defense has allowed one offensive touchdown on the year.

* A key for both teams when the Wolves are on defense will be yards per play. West Alabama leads the GSC in that category, averaging 7.3 yards per play this season. The Wolves are also the best in the conference in that category, allowing 3.6 yards per play.
