Carrollton, GA - It's week 12 of the season, and for the first time in 14 years, the University of West Georgia fans are not simply a basketball school in mid-November. The Wolves, in the first year under new head coach Will Hall, are in the playoffs after a stellar 9-2 season. UWG will now travel as the 6th seed in this year's playoffs to 3rd-seed Tuskegee this Saturday, taking on the Golden Tigers at Abbott Memorial Alumni Stadium at 1 p.m. (EST)
Playoffs New But Not Really
Since suffering their second loss of the season in Week 8 to North Alabama, the Wolves have essentially been in playoff mode. Each game, if not a win, would mean that week 12 would not come for West Georgia this year. And Hall's Wolves have performed admirably during that stretch, going 3-0 and outscoring Mississippi College, Florida Tech and Shorter by a combined score of 135-70.
The Coaches
West Georgia is coached by Will Hall, who is in his first season at West Georgia. He has an overall record of 34-13 in his fourth year as a head coach and has now made the NCAA Playoffs in three of his four years as a head coach. The head coach at Tuskegee is Willie Slater, who is in his ninth year as coach of the Golden Tigers.
The Battle on Offense
West Georgia comes into this week's game as one of the top rushing teams in the nation, with its 250 yards per game average ranking 14th nationally. Tuskegee averages 396 yards of total offense, but has scored 45 total touchdowns this season.
The Battle on Defense
The biggest battle will be on the defensive side of the ball, as each team sports a stingy unit. The Wolves are 22nd in the nation in scoring defense, allowinig just 18 points per game on the year while Tuskegee is 38th nationally, allowing 20.4 points per game. West Georgia has two victories by shutout this year and another where the opponent scored only a single safety. Tuskegee has one shutout win and won another while allowing just a field goal.
Hinsley in the limelight
The biggest story for the Wolves revolves around senior running
Seth Hinsley, who has emerged as one of the top running threats in South Region 2 and is one of eight backs in the region to break 1,000 yards for the year. He and Lenior-Rhyne's Chris Robinson are the only 1,000-yard backs still playing at this point..
Two-Man Signal-Calling
Tuskegee has had success both in running and passing this season, and their two-quarterback system has worked, as each have thrown for more than 1,000 yards on the year. West Georgia also has two capable quarterbacks, as junior
Dallas Dickey has been the starter for much of the year, but senior
Emmanuel Taylor had the game of his life against North Alabama on the road. The senior nearly beat UNA single-handedly in Florence, AL, passing for 185 yards and rushing for 178. He threw for a touchdown and rushed for three more in the contest.
Coming off the End
Both offensive lines have produced two First Team All-Conference offensive linemen, but both teams also have a dangerous defensive line awaiting that offensive front.
Darrius Caldwell of UWG leads the Gulf South Conference in sacks with 11 this season and Julian Morgan of Tuskegee has 9.5 sacks on the year. The team that is able to control the line of scrimmage just might be headed to Cleveland, MS next week to take on No. 2 Delta State.
