Football Preview: The UWA Game

Carrollton, GA - The Gulf South Conference schedule begins this week for the West Georgia football program with the biggest test of the season thus far for the Wolves, especially on the offensive side of the ball, as UWG heads on the road to take on West Alabama in Tiger Stadium in Livingston, Ala. The Wolves and Tigers will tee it up at 3:00 p.m. (EST) on Saturday afternoon.

"We are going to have to do a great job of maintaining our blocks and holding onto the ball on offense this week," said head coach Will Hall. "This UWA defense is one of the best in the history of the Gulf South Conference, so we have to be ready for a big challenge ahead of us."

West Georgia is tied for first in the GSC in points per game and is also first in points allowed per game, as the Wolves average 47.5 points on the year and have given up just 11.8 points per game this season.

The Wolves are led by Dallas Dickey, who is tied for seventh in the nation in completion percentage, hitting on 53 of his 77 passes this season. Dickey has developed two go-to targets this year in Qa Walker and Shaq Hall, who each have at least 10 receptions this season. Both have three touchdown receptions and Walker leads with 239 yards receiving.

* The drive for the 2015 NCAA Playoffs continues this weekend as the 2nd-ranked West Georgia Wolves (4-0) take on the undefeated West Alabama Tigers (4-0) in the Gulf South Conference opener for both teams. UWG is coming off of a 56-0 Homecoming victory last week over the Clark Atlanta Panthers while West Alabama took on Texas A&M-Kingsville, winning 31-22 in Texas.
* This will be the 33rd meeting between the Wolves and the Tigers, as West Alabama joins UNA and Valdosta as the only three teams that West Georgia has played in each of the 33 years since the return of college football to Carrollton. UWG holds a 19-13 all-time lead over the Tigers, including a 26-17 victory in last season's GSC opener in University Stadium.
* West Georgia is coached by Will Hall, who is in his second season at West Georgia. He has an overall record of 41-14 in his fifth year as a head coach. In 19 games at the helm of the UWG program, Hall is 16-3. West Alabama's coach is Brett Gilliland, who took over the reigns of the Tiger program in the spring of 2014, and he has a 9-6 record in Livingston.
* The Wolves had their first viral moment of the Will Hall era on the first touchdown of the win over Clark Atlanta last week. Junior cornerback Marcus Sayles broke free and blocked a CAU punt, taking it directly off the foot of the punter and strolling into the end zone to give West Georgia a 7-0 lead in the contest. The blocked punt was Sayles' third in the last two games and fourth blocked kick of the 2015 season, which leads the nation. He has six blocked kicks in his career at UWG.
* Sophomore receiver Qa Walker had a breakout game of sorts against Clark Atlanta last weekend, catching three passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. He now has three of the longest plays of the season, with two of those providing touchdowns for the Wolves. He had a 55-yard touchdown catch and a 55-yard reception against Clark Atlanta as well as a 47-yard touchdown reception against Catawba in the opener. He has 10 catches for 239 yards and three scores this season.
* Junior defensive end Alex Armah had one of the best days of his career against Clark Atlanta, leading the team with eight tackles. That tackle count included three sacks and four tackles for a loss, and Armah is now 9th in the nation in sacks after this past weekend.
