Carrollton, GA - The West Georgia Wolves will take their first test as the No. 1 team in the nation this weekend on the road, as the Wolves will head to Clinton, Miss. to take on the Mississippi College Choctaws in Gulf South Conference action. Kickoff for Saturday's contest is set for 4:00 p.m. (EST) from Robinson-Hale Stadium.
The Wolves come into the weekend riding high after running the gauntlet over the past four weeks, taking down West Alabama, Valdosta State, Delta State and North Alabama. To look at the score through the first three quarters of the last four games shows the domination that the Wolves have shown this season. At the end of the third quarter, West Georgia had a combined lead of 147-24 in the four games, with three of those against nationally ranked opponents.
Against North Alabama this past weekend, the Wolves put together a dominating rushing attack with 383 yards rushing on 55 carries. West Georgia's defense showed up in full force as well, holding a team averaging more than 500 yards per game to just 318.
* Week nine has been one to remember for the West Georgia Wolves, as head coach Will Hall's program was ranked first in the nation by both the American Football Coaches Association and D2football.com. The ranking came on the heels of a 31-10 victory over the North Alabama Lions. But the first region rankings also came out this week, with UWG at the top.
* The region rankings are the most important in the quest for the 2015 postseason, as rankings within the region determine the seedings for the NCAA Playoffs. This year, there will be seven teams in the playoffs from Super Region 2, with the top seed receiving a bye in the first round.
* The Wolves come into this week's game with an 8-0 record on the year and a 4-0 record in Gulf South Conference play. West Georgia has been dominant this season, winning by an average of nearly 30 points per game and nearly 21 points per game in GSC play. Mississippi College is 2-5 overall and 0-4 in GSC play, and the Choctaws are coming off of a 31-14 loss to Florida Tech last week.
* West Georgia is coached by Will Hall, who is in his second season at West Georgia. He has an overall record of 45-14 in his fifth year as a head coach. In 23 games at the helm of the UWG program, Hall is 20-3. Mississippi College is headed by John Bland, who is in his second year as the head coach of the Choctaws. He has 10 years as a head coach under his belt with a 78-40 record overall, and he is 3-14 in is second year at MC.
* The 31-10 victory over North Alabama was the third-straight game where UWG won by at least three touchdowns. The closest that any team has been to West Georgia on the year is West Alabama, as the Tigers put together two fourth-quarter touchdown drives after the Wolves built a 32-0 lead at halftime. The final score in that contest was 32-14.
* The UWG defense has been playing at a very high level in the last two weeks. Against Delta State and North Alabama, two of the best offenses in the nation, the Wolves allowed an average of 8.5 points and 272.5 yards per game. Both teams scored just one touchdown, with UNA scoring the only offensive touchdown of the two contests. That score came in the third quarter with the Wolves up 31-3 at the time.
* Junior defensive back
Marcus Sayles did it again this past week, as he blocked his fifth kick of the year and the seventh of his career with a field goal block against North Alabama. It was his second field goal block of the year and fifth overall blocked kick.
