The 2015 Gulf South Conference season couldn't have gone much better for head coach Will Hall and his Wolves, as UWG moved to 5-0 for the second-straight season with a 32-14 victory over West Alabama. West Georgia was dominant against the previously 4-0 Tigers, outgaining West Alabama 211-34 in the first half of the contest, using touchdowns in all phases of the game to build a 32-0 lead in the first half in Livingston.
The Wolves now turn their attention to the second clash of ranked teams in University Stadium history, as the 21st-ranked Valdosta State Blazers come to town to face 2nd-ranked West Georgia. West Georgia is 3-0 at home this season and is currently on an 11-game winning streak on Ra-Lin Field in University Stadium.
This is the third meeting between the Wolves and Valdosta State since Hall became head coach. VSU won the first meeting a year ago in Valdosta, then UWG won the Super Region 2 Championship later in the year in Valdosta.
- Junior LaMarcus Franks was listed as the starter by head coach Will Hall heading into the season, but he has slowly been getting back into the groove after suffering a hamstring injury during preseason camp. Against West Alabama, he picked up his first touchdown in a UWG uniform, poundinig up the middle for a seven-yard touchdown for the first score of the game.
- Redshirt freshman
Wil Garrett is one name to look out for in the future of UWG football, as he already has 18 points accounted for this season. He has two rushing touchdowns and also has thrown for three two-point conversions and run for three more. He had a run for a two-point conversion on the Wolves' first touchdown against West Alabama this past weekend.
- Junior defensive end
Alex Armah has been getting in on the offensive side of the ball in goal line situations, as well as on extra points. The Dacula native has 10 points scored this season, including a touchdown reception and a pair of two-point conversions.
- As a team, the Wolves have done an outstanding job of holding onto the ball this season, as UWG averages 32 minutes in time of possession on the year. The best came against Fayetteville State in the third week of the season, when West Georgia held the ball for more than 40 minutes of the contest.
* After a very convincing 32-14 victory over West Alabama in the 2015 Gulf South Conference opener this weekend, the West Georgia Wolves return home for a battle with a very familiar foe as the Valdosta State Blazers come to town. The Wolves are currently ranked 2nd in the nation, and VSU was ranked 9th last week before a 34-12 setback at home to 8th-ranked North Alabama.
* This will be the 34th meeting between the Wolves and the Blazers, as Valdosta State joins UNA and West Alabama as the only three teams that West Georgia has played in each of the 33 years since the return of college football to Carrollton. West Georgia won the most recent meeting, winning the Super Region 2 championship last December in Valdosta. This will be the 4th meeting between the teams on Ra-Lin Field, with VSU holding a 3-0 advantage in University Stadium.
* West Georgia is coached by Will Hall, who is in his second season at West Georgia. He has an overall record of 42-14 in his fifth year as a head coach. In 20 games at the helm of the UWG program, Hall is 17-3. Valdosta State is coached by
David Dean, who has a 75-24 record and is in his ninth year in Valdosta.
* West Georgia was dominant in the first two quarters of Gulf South Conference football last Saturday against West Alabama, generating 211 yards of offense while holding the Tigers to just 34 total yards. The Wolves built a 32-0 lead ini the first 25 minutes on the clock, scoring on the ground, through the air, on a fumble recovery and on a punt return.
* The dominance of the UWG defense against the West Alabama Tigers was on full display in the stat column, as the Wolves held the Tigers to just five first downs and 34 yards in the first half. UWA had eight drives in the first half and just two of those were for more than three plays.
* Senior quarterback
Dallas Dickey was surgical in his play in the first half of Saturday's contest against West Alabama, going 9-for-12 for 172 yards and a touchdown in the first two quarters of action. The Carrollton native ended up 17-for-26 for more than 200 yards in the contest. Dickey is 7th in the nation in completion percentage after this weekend's games and is 11th in passing efficiency.
* The West Georgia Wolves remained in the No. 2 spot in the national rankings this week, largely fueled by a total defensive effort that is now ranked third in the nation, giving up 192.8 yards per game on the year after the first Gulf South Conference game of the season.
