Carrollton, GA - It all comes down to this, as Championship Saturday has come to Carrollton for the first time since the 2000 season. The West Georgia Wolves, No. 1 in the region, No. 6 in the D2 media poll and No. 7 in the AFCA Top-25, come into Saturday's contest with looking for the first GSC championship for UWG since 2000. Standing in the way of that title and the top spot in Super Region 2 heading into the playoffs is the Shorter Hawks. The Wolves and Hawks will kick-off at 2 p.m., with senior day ceremonies and recognition beginning at approximately 1:30 p.m.
The West Georgia Wolves suffered their first defeat of the season, knocking them from the ranks of the unbeaten in the nation and from the No. 1 spot in the national polls.
The most important poll, however, came out on Monday afternoon, as the Super Region 2 poll had the Wolves remaining at the top of the poll as the No. 1 team in the South Region. If the season were to end today, West Georgia would have a bye in the first round of the playoffs and would be preparing to host a Division II playoff game for the first time in school history on November 28.
The Wolves have been putting up some gaudy numbers in the running game the past few weeks, and are now fifth all-time in single-season rushing in terms of yards. The 2015 UWG squad just surpassed the 2000 squad for second in rushing touchdowns with 28.
That's where the numbers have jumped recently, as the Wolves have had 12 rushing touchdowns in the last three games, with four each game.
- Junior defensive end
Dylan Donahue took the lead in the sack game this past weekend in a big way with two more sacks against the Florida Tech Panthers. That makes four in the past two weeks and he now has 10 on the seaosn for the Wolves. That number leads the Gulf South Conference at 1.0 sacks per game. He and fellow defensive end
Alex Armah are a big reason that UWG leads the conference in team sacks as well, as Armah has eight on the season.
- While senior quarterback
Dallas Dickey has been getting the headlines as the starter this season, redshirt freshman
Wil Garrett has quietly been having a season that is very similar to that of Dickey in his first year. In 2012, Dickey had 10 rushing touchdowns in playing a very similar role to what Garrett has done this season. Garrett has come in for short yardage situations and excelled, especially on the goal line, where he has nine rushing touchdowns on the year.
- Freshman running back
Devontae Jackson jumped into the team lead in rushing yards this past week with a career-high 167 yards on 21 carries against Florida Tech. He now has 706 yards on 93 carries on the season and is tied for the Gulf South Conference lead in average yards per carry with 7.6. He was named GSC Freshman of the Week for his performance against Florida Tech and now is tied ffor the team lead with nine touchdowns.
- Linebacker
Marion Chapman has been the top tackler for the Wolves this season, with 49 tackles on the year total. Against Florida Tech, he picked up another stat, as he had his first interception of the season in the second half.
