Alex Armah has been having a monster junior season thus far, as the Dacula native has been a star for the 2nd-ranked West Georgia Wolves on both sides of the ball. This week, however, Armah was brightest on the defensive side, and his performance earned him the Gulf South Conference Defensive Player of the Week award.
Armah is UWG's first defensive honoree of the season, after the junior spearheaded the Wolves' 56-0 home shutout of SIAC Clark-Atlanta. The Lawrenceville, Ga. native tied for the team-high in tackles with seven along with four solo stops. He also led all players with 3.5 tackles for a loss of 14 yards and 2.0 sacks for 13 yards. His number of tackles behind the line of scrimmage also tied him for tops in the GSC so far this season.
The junior is the Wolves' second-leading tackler on the season now with 15 total stops, including nine unassisted. He has seven tackles for a loss on the year for 37 yards lost and also has five sacks. That number puts Armah in a tie for 9th in the nation in sacks per game with 1.25. In addition, he has caught a touchdown pass and twice found paydirt in the passing game on two-point conversions.
North Alabama quarterback Luke Wingo was been named the Gulf South Conference Offensive Players of the Week for games played in Week Four of the 2015 season.
West Alabama's Tyreek Hill was tabbed the Special Teams Player of the Week and
Florida Tech running back Antwuan Haynes took home the Freshman of the Week honor.
Armah and West Georgia will begin their Gulf South Conference season this weekend as the Wolves take on undefeated West Alabama in Tiger Stadium in Livingston, Ala.
