CARROLLTON, Ga. - The cobwebs from a 10-day layover during exam week shook off for the West Georgia Wolves midway through the first half on Tuesday night at The Coliseum, but a late charge from the Montevallo Falcons proved to be the difference in an 81-78 loss for the Wolves in the final home game on the UWG campus before the holiday break.
Seth Brown-Carter led all scorers on the evening with 24 points on 5-of-9 from three-point range, but a 10-0 run over the final 2:37 from the Falcons upended the Wolves hopes. The loss was the second for the Wolves in Gulf South Conference play while Montevallo improves to 3-0 against league opponents.
Montevallo came out of the gate firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a 23-7 lead in the first eight minutes of the contest. A three-pointer from sophomore guard Michael Zabetakis stopped that run and opened up the floodgates for the Wolves, as West Georgia cut the lead to six at 35-29 with 5:20 remaining in the first half. The Falcons pushed the lead back to 12 over the final five minutes of the half, but the Wolves came right back and a dunk from Brown-Carter closed out the scoring in the opening period and sent the teams to the locker room with UM leading 45-37.
The first seven minutes of the second half saw a seesaw battle between the two teams with West Georgia cutting the lead to three before Montevallo pushed it back out to nine. But, with 13:10 left in the game, the first tie of the contest happened on a three-pointer from Brown-Carter. The Wolves continued to press, taking a 66-58 lead on a layup from Kadeim Jones with 9:45 remaining, the largest lead of the game for UWG.
A layup from Kovi Tate gave the Wolves a 78-71 lead with 2:37 left in the game, but the Wolves went cold from the field after that as the Falcons heated up. The Wolves had the ball with 4.8 seconds left in the game, but the final shot did not find the mark as Montevallo took the victory.
Tate had his fifth double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and pulling 11 rebounds. The junior has scored in double-figures in every game this season and has at least eight rebounds in seven of the 10 games. Zabetakis scored 12 points and added four assists to give the Wolves three double-digit scorers in the game. Oronte' Anderson had six points and 11 assists, his first double-digit assist night. He has flirted with double-digit assists twice this season with nine assists in two games.
The Wolves will be back in action on Saturday evening, taking on the Auburn-Montgomery Warhawks in the final game before the holiday break in Montgomery, Alabama.
