CARROLLTON, Ga. - Nothing has been easy for the West Georgia Wolves in the 2019-20 basketball season, and Thursday night's matchup with the Auburn Montgomery Warhawks saw all of the challenges that have been lurking for head coach
Dave Moore and the Wolves this year. But through all of that, sophomore
Michael Zabetakis stepped to the line with 0.6 seconds left in the game and buried two free-throws to give UWG a 75-74 victory over AUM.
That was half of the output for Zabetakis on the night, as he played just 15 minutes in the contest, scoring four points on 4-for-4 shooting from the charity stripe.
Seth Brown-Carter was the story of the game for the Wolves, going 3-for-6 from three-point range and leading all scorers with 28 points.
Kadeim Jones added 16 and
Keshawn Heard scored 10 to round out the double-figure scoring for West Georgia in the game.
The Wolves shot 44 percent from the field in the first half and held Auburn Montgomery to just 35 percent shooting while building a 38-28 lead heading into the locker room at the break. Junior point guard
Oronte' Anderson scored all eight of his points in the first half, hitting 2-of-3 from three-point range, and he was one of players with at least eight points in the first half.
After trailing 8-2 in the first four minutes of the game, the West Georgia defense picked up the pace, as the Wolves went on a 19-2 run over a six minute span to take a commanding 21-10 lead with 10 minutes left in the first half. The Wolves led by as many as 16 points in the first half before AUM went on a 6-0 run over the final 2:32 of the period to cut the UWG lead to 38-28 at the half.
Auburn Montgomery began to chip away at the UWG lead, tying the game at 55-55 with 11:09 left in the contest. From that point on, the biggest lead in the game was four points, as the two teams played to a near draw over the final 11 minutes. With 11 seconds left in the game, AUM's Stanley Davis was fouled while shooting a three-pointer while the Wolves led 73-71. Davis hit all three from the charity stripe, giving the Warhawks a 74-73 lead.
West Georgia came down the court quickly and Zabetakis found himself at the top of the key with just seconds left and only one player between him and the basket. The sophomore never hesitated, drawing a foul while attempting a layup with 0.6 seconds left, setting up the game-winning free-throws.
The 2019-20 season will come to a close on Saturday afternoon, taking on the Shorter Hawks for the second time in seven days at 4:00 p.m. at The Coliseum.
