CARROLLTON, Ga. – West Georgia soccer got a much-needed win on Friday night, defeating the Alabama Huntsville Chargers 2-1 in front of the home crowd at University Field.
Coming in on a four-game skid, the Wolves (6-6-0, 4-5-0 GSC) needed to right the ship, and they did just that on Friday night against an Alabama Huntsville (5-5-2, 3-4-1 GSC) that was ahead of them in the Gulf South Conference standings.
"It was a massive win for our confidence because you could tell everybody was low," said head coach
Stacey Balaam. "We had just been lacking goals, but we just had to be patient and trust the process and keep performing well."
The Wolves persevered after a scoreless first half, finally breaking through early in the second half. In the 50
th minute, the Wolves earned a corner, and
Sadie Prince sent the ball in. The pass found
Hillary Resendiz who scored the game's opening goal to put the Wolves up 1-0.
Then in the 75
th minute, UWG got an insurance goal on another
Sadie Prince pass, this one finding the head of freshman
Kaylah Nichols. It was the third goal of Nichols career and proved to be extremely big as UAH scored a goal in the 84
th minute.
It was one of the league's top scorers, Brynn Colvin, who buried a pass from Melanie Brannon to cut the UWG lead in half.
UAH had a few chances down the stretch, but the Wolves and goal keeper
Haley Brinkman snuffed them out to earn the 2-1 win.
Prince's two assists moves her to eighth all-time in career points with 34.
Defensively, the Wolves faced 11 shots and three on target. Brinkman ended the night with two saves in goal.
West Georgia now shifts their focus to West Alabama for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Sunday afternoon.
