West Georgia Powers Past West Alabama

Soccer Scores Three, Shuts Out Tigers

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The UWG Soccer team added a massive three points to the cause on Sunday, defeating West Alabama 3-0 in Gulf South Conference action at University Field.

Coming off of Friday's hard-fought win over UAH, the Wolves (7-6-0, 5-5-0 GSC) showed no signs of fatigue as they put up three goals against a West Alabama team that was averaging less than a goal allowed per game.

The Tigers (7-4-2, 5-3-1 GSC) had just six shots in the contest, well below their average while the Wolves rattled off 13 shots, putting seven on frame.

West Georgia knew this would be an important weekend, and the Wolves, led by senior captain Janaisia Smith, who scored one of UWG's three goals on Sunday, did not disappoint.

"We knew this weekend was going to be really important for us, and we knew we had to come out and show really what we're made of, and we proved that by going 2-0 this weekend," said Smith.

It took just 11 minutes for the Wolves to get on the board in the game as Jade Butcher made a long, high pass that Cassidi Thomas played perfectly to get  one-on-one opportunity with the UWA keeper, and Thomas buried it in the bottom corner, to put UWG up.

The next goal came in the 67th minute off of a free kick. It was senior Hillary Resendiz who powered the shot past the diving keeper, to give the Wolves a cushion.

And just for good measure, Smith added a third goal after a handball in the box awarded the Wolves a penalty kick.

Smith, a native of Washington state had family on hand to see here score, and some here in Carrollton for the first time.

"It felt really great. My family doesn't get a chance to come to a lot of games because I'm from Tacoma, Washington," Smith added. "For them to come all this way, my brother was here for the first time, and my aunt and uncle and cousin, so to score that goal in front them means so much to me."

Defensively, West Georgia put a clean sheet, allowing just three shots on goal by West Alabama, which were all handled by Haley Brinkman in goal.

West Georgia now goes on the road next weekend to take on the Auburn Montgomery Warhawks and Montevallo Falcons. The action begins at Auburn Montgomery on Friday night at 6 p.m.
