Wolves End Weekend With Loss to Montevallo

CARROLLTON, Ga. – UWG volleyball finished their two-game weekend with a 3-1 loss to, conference opponent, Montevallo.

West Georgia struggled to contain a high-powered Falcons offense as Montevallo accumulated 66 kills with a .304 hitting percentage in the four-set match. The loss drops the Wolves to 11-14 overall and 5-7 in the GSC on the season.

The first set saw Montevallo win the race to 10 with UWG right behind them with 8 points of their own. A kill from Emilee Harris sparked a 5-0 run for the Wolves to put the score at 13-10. After back-in-forth action, West Georgia went on another 5-0 run to take a 20-17 late in the set forcing a Montevallo timeout. The Falcons responded with a kill, but they struggled to stop the UWG offense as a service ace from Sydney Blackmon won the set 25-20.

The momentum from the first set carried over to the second as the Wolves blitzed the Falcons with UWG ahead 10-5 early. Montevallo started to find their rhythm as they went on a 6-1 run to knot the score at 11. The set remained very competitive as neither team could push their lead past three points until Montevallo used a 4-1 run to win the set 25-21.

The third set started out similarly to the second as West Georgia marched out to a 10-5 lead until a kill from Montevallo sparked a 6-0 run to give the Falcons a 11-10 lead. Kills from Autumn Mayes, Emilee Harris, and Kaylyn Buchanan put a halt to the Montevallo onslaught for a second until the Falcons put together another run to take a 21-17 lead deep in the set. With the set slipping away, UWG puts together an 8-3 run to take a 25-24 lead, forcing a Montevallo timeout. Out of the timeout, the Falcons used a 3-0 run to win the set 27-25.

The Wolves got off to a slow start in the fourth set as Montevallo took a 7-3 lead until Caitlin Frazee sparked West Georgia by scoring four straight points right off the bench. Montevallo responded with a 7-2 run to give them some breathing room in the set. With the score sitting at 17-11, Autumn Mayes and Emilee Harris facilitated a 4-0 run to cut the deficit to two. UWG struggled to stop the Falcon's attack as Montevallo used their strong hitting to win the set 25-21.

Emilee Harris accumulated a team-high 14 kills with Caitlin Frazee behind her with 10 kills of her own while adding a team-high five blocks. Autumn Mayes served up a game-highs in assists and service aces with 40 and four. West Georgia will look to snap their five-game losing streak as they head to Cleveland, Tennessee with a meeting with the Lee Flames set for Tuesday at 6 p.m.
