Thomas Delivers Game Winner, Wolves Clinch Postseason Berth

Fourth Straight Victory Sends UWG to GSC Tourney

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – It was an overtime thriller in Alabama on Sunday, and after 101 minutes, the UWG Soccer team defeated Montevallo 3-2 to win a fourth straight game and clinch a spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament.

West Georgia (9-6-0, 7-5-0 GSC) got the game winner from Cassidi Thomas after the two teams played to a 2-2 score at the end of regulation and a wild final 15 minutes of the final half.

The Falcons (7-8-1, 4-7-1 GSC) got a lead in the 43rd minute as Alexandra Dan scored the game's first goal, but it was short lived in terms of game time, as the Wolves tied it up early in the second half.

Just three minutes into the half, Hillary Resendiz tied it up, making it a 1-1 game in the 48th minute. The goal was the fourth of the season for Resendiz, giving her the team lead in goals. It was the 13th of her career, tying her for eighth all-time in career goals.

The game would stay at 1-1 until Montevallo got a go-ahead goal in the 78th minute by Madeline Milby, but just as the Wolves had done earlier, they wasted no time in equalizing the game.

In the 80th minute, it was Florence Pegrum who tied things up at 2-2 on her first career collegiate goal.

The score would stay tied through the end of regulation and all the way through the first overtime period, but the Wolves were ready to head back across the state line, and that's when Thomas delivered the first overtime game winner for UWG since 2018, which also came against Montevallo.

Thomas' 101st minute game winner was her third goal of the season and second in as many weekends.

With the win, UWG is back in the GSC Tournament for the first time since 2018, and sets up an important regular season finale on Thursday against Valdosta State. The Wolves can clinch home-field advantage in the opening round of the GSC Tournament if they can make it a fifth straight win and defeat VSU at home.

Haley Brinkman was big in goal for the Wolves on Sunday, making eight saves on the day.

West Georgia will host Valdosta State on Thursday, November 4 at 5 p.m. for Senior Day at University Field.
