CARROLLTON, Ga. – A cold night of shooting was the demise of the UWG women's basketball team on Wednesday night as the Wolves fell 54-44 to the West Florida Argonauts in the Gulf South Conference opener at The Coliseum.
West Georgia (2-3, 0-1 GSC) shot just 16-of-51 from the field on Wednesday, scoring a season-low 44 points. The Wolves defense kept them in the game as they help West Florida (5-1, 1-0 GSC) to their second lowest field goal percentage and lowest scoring output.
The Wolves raced out to an early lead, scoring the final four points of the opening quarter to lead 15-10 after the first. West Florida started the second quarter on a 10-0 run to flip the early deficit to a five-point lead before West Georgia could score a basket in the second quarter.
There would be four lead changes in the final 2:20 of the first half, with
Ranajah Verdell knocking down a three-pointer at the buzzer to give UWG a 28-26 lead at halftime.
In the second half, West Florida would outscore the Wolves 28-16as UWG would shoot a combined 6-for-26 in the final two quarters.
Senior guard
Zaria Bankston led UWG with 10 points and three assists, while
Siera Carter and
Tahya Campbell each added eight.
The Wolves were outrebounded by 12 in the contest, but led by
Valencia Carroll and
Jaylin Austin with five boards each.
UWF's Jaclyn Jarnot would record a double-double for the Argos with 11 points and 10 rebounds while freshman Zoe Piller led all scorers with 18 points.
The Wolves take back to the road for the first time in over two weeks on Saturday, taking on the Valdosta State Blazers on Saturday at 6 p.m.
