UWG Women Defeat Albany State in Non-Conference Play

Senior Duo of Bankston and Carter Combine for 33

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The UWG women's basketball team earned a 63-60 non-conference win at home on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Albany State Golden Rams.

The Wolves (4-4) got a big effort from seniors Zaria Bankston and Siera Carter as they combined for 33 for the Wolves 63 points. Bankston scored 17 points while Carter scored 16 in the win.

West Georgia wasted no time in getting on the board, scoring the first three points in the first minute of the contest. From that point, Albany State (2-9) built a 19-6 lead, and eventually led by as much as 14 in the second quarter.

In the second quarter, UWG outscored the Golden Rams 20-17, cutting the deficit to 11 by the halftime break as a Jaylin Austin layup with four seconds left made it a 36-29 ASU lead after 20 minutes of play.

The Wolves began the second half on a 5-0 run, cutting the deficit to two, and took their first lead of the game at the 1:50 mark of the third quarter at 43-42.

In the final quarter, it was a back-and-forth affair until the Wolves took the lead for good midway through the period. With 13 seconds left, Albany State went to the line and got it back to a one-possession game before UWG was able to drown out the clock and earn a non-conference win.

Joining Carter and Bankston in double-figures was Valencia Carroll who had 10 points. Jaylin Austin led the Wolves on the glass with 13 rebounds.

West Georgia is back in action on Monday afternoon, hosting West Alabama in Gulf South Conference play at 2 p.m. at The Coliseum.
