MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The UWG softball team ended up on the wrong end of a pitcher's duel on Friday night, falling 3-0 to Auburn Montgomery on the road in Gulf South Conference play.
In a game that featured just 10 hits total, the Wolves (16-7, 12-4 GSC) had just four hits and were shutout. AUM had six hits, and took advantage in key situations, whereas the Wolves stranded nine baserunners in the series opener.
Auburn Montgomery (20-4, 12-4 GSC) got four innings from Bailee Barnes and three one-hit innings of relief from Chanel Newcomer, keeping the Wolves bats quiet all game long. West Georgia had the bases loaded with one out in the second and two in scoring position in the third and could not push a run across in either frame.
Kya Draper started in the circle for the Wolves, pitching five innings and allowing two runs on four hits. The sophomore was charged with her first loss of the season, falling to 6-1.
The Warhawks used a leadoff triple and a single in the fourth to score the game's first run. The home squad then added two runs on three hits and an error in the sixth.
Offensively for the Wolves,
Chandler Mevis had two singles on the day. The Wolves' only extra-base hit came from
Madison Slappey who doubled in the seventh. Senior
Ashley Ellison had the fourth hit for UWG.
The Wolves and Warhawks will wrap up the series tomorrow with a 2 p.m. doubleheader from Montgomery.
