Wolves Earn Historic Win in Trevor's Game

CARROLLTON, Ga. – For the first time in school history, the West Georgia Wolves knocked off perennial power West Florida on Sunday afternoon at University Field, winning 1-0 over the ninth-ranked team in the country.

West Georgia (4-1-0, 2-0-0 GSC) came into Sunday's Gulf South Conference showdown 0-19 all-time against West Florida (4-1-1, 0-1-1 GSC), and at the end of 90 minutes, the Wolves were victorious after a Jazmine Santiago goal in the 73rd minute.

Playing in what was called Trevor's Game, the Wolves were honoring Trevor Shinall, a leukemia survivor, and brother of Ally Shinall for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and did they ever deliver an epic performance on this special Sunday afternoon.

"I'm at a loss for words. Everybody is just buzzing because we had never beaten them in school history," said head coach Stacey Balaam. "The girls were just relentless today. They had to fight for everything and we knew we had to stay mentally focused for the entire game."

It was a defensive battle early on, with only six shots total in the opening half. The Argos had five first half shots to UWG's one in the opening 45.

In the second half, the Wolves kept the energy up, and finally broke through in the 73rd minute as senior Jazmine Santiago split two defenders and buried the shot to put the Wolves up.

UWG then had to defend for the final 17 minutes as West Florida put the pressure on the try for the equalizer.

It was the 16th career goal for Santiago and her first of the season.

The win was the fourth in a row for West Georgia and the third straight shutout. A West Georgia team has not had three consecutive shutouts since 2006. As for the 4-1 start, it's the best start in school history through five games.

West Georgia goes back on the road to continue GSC play next weekend, taking on Lee on Friday evening at 6 p.m. in Cleveland, Tennessee.
