CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia Baseball got their first Gulf South Conference win on Friday in a dramatic comeback win, defeating the Auburn Montgomery Warhawks 9-7.
Robert Coleman would get the start on the mound and turn in his best performance of the season so far. The Birmingham, AL native went 6 innings, allowing just two runs on three hits, two walks, and four strikeouts.
"Rob went out and gave us an opportunity as a team to win the ballgame. The one thing I always tell our guys is that we are never out of the fight. We need a quality start for our offense to get going, and Rob came out and threw extremely well" said head coach Jeff Smith.
West Georgia (7-5 1-3) had plenty of chances early to get Coleman some run support, but mental mistakes would end up costing them. In the first inning,
Brody Wortham led off the game with a single, but just two batters later would be doubled up on a line drive to the third baseman.
In the second, more of the same would happen.
Davis Schwartz would lead off the inning with a single, and also be doubled up on a line drive to the hot corner.
"We had opportunities to score. They just made plays and made pitches and we didn't execute enough offensively early." said Smith.
Auburn Montgomery (9-6 0-1) would get the scoring started in the third inning after a leadoff single, a sac bunt, and another single put runners at first and third with one out. Jackson Ceman of AUM would put a ball on the ground and as the Wolves would attempt a double play, an overthrow of first base allowed two runs to come across, giving the Warhawks an early 2-0 lead.
That is exactly where the score would stay until the top of the eighth inning. Both sides pitched the ball extremely well, and only gave up two hits in four innings of baseball.
Jackson Hodnick would be the first man out of the bullpen for the Wolves as he would come in for Coleman in the seventh inning. After a clean seventh, Hodnick ran into some trouble in the eighth.
The Warhawks would strike for five runs in the top of the eighth, headlined by a three run, bases-clearing double by Brody Syer. Smith would call on
Ezra Brown as he would come in and get the final two outs in the eighth, but not after AUM took a 7-0 lead.
Just when you thought the Wolves were out of it, they slowly started chipping away at the lead. Three singles in a row by
Collin Moore,
Sam Ladner, and
Davis Schwartz had the Wolves in business.
Fuzzy Furr would step in and pinch hit in the eighth and deliver one of the biggest at bats of the day, which was a two RBI triple, chipping the lead to 7-3.
Jonathan Logsdon would drive Furr in with a sac fly, and after eight at Cole Field, the game was now 7-4.
Brown was tasked with keeping the lead where it was in the ninth, and he did exactly that. After a leadoff walk, Brown retired the next three hitters to send the game to the bottom of the ninth.
In the ninth inning, it was all West Georgia.
Brody Wortham and
Collin Moore led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and then were immediately driven in by
Sam Ladner on a two RBI double. With the lead now at one,
Davis Schwartz would get a single, sending Ladner to third, but a costly base running error would see Ladner get tagged out in between third and home.
Jackson Webb and
Fuzzy Furr would both reach, and in stepped
Jonathan Logsdon with a chance to win the game. The rest, as they say, is history.
Logsdon would launch a fly ball over the right center field wall, sending the Wolves home with a walk-off winner in their first GSC home game of the season.
"We scored nine in the last two innings, and that's what we told them. We're never out of the fight, and we're gonna keep competing no matter what the score is because we're just playing the game. Our hitters stepped up and started putting the bat on the ball and we had some things that went well for us."
The Wolves walked away with their first Gulf South Conference win of the season, after a disappointing road trip to Pensacola last weekend.
"I know what this team is and what we're capable of because this is a team that can get on a run and string together a lot of wins, so it's just a matter of them staying focused on the things that matter and playing the game the right way." said Smith.
The Wolves are back in action on Saturday as they will take on Auburn Montgomery in a double header to finish out the series. First pitch is set for 1:00p.m.
