Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Season Closes with loss to Valdosta State

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The 2021-22 UWG women's basketball season came to a close on Saturday afternoon at The Coliseum as the Wolves lost to rival Valdosta State 79-57 in the season finale.

Siera Carter had 18 points in her swansong for West Georgia, hitting 8-of-19 from the field on Senior Day while junior Jaylin Austin added 11 points and seven rebounds. On the opposite, the Blazers had six players in double-figures in the game with none scoring more than 13.

"I'm disappointed in the result, but I'll stand by each and every one of my players as people all day every day," said head coach Scott Groninger. "Less than one percent of people have the chance to be on a team in college and sometimes it's tough and this has been a challenging year for a lot of things that we have had to fight through. We put ourselves in a position to get to the tournament with a couple of overtime wins, but the last three games we just ran out of juice."

The game was a tight battle for the first quarter and the bulk of the second quarter as the two teams went back-and-forth with the lead. With three minutes left in until halftime, Jaylin Austin hit a runner in the lane to cut the VSU advantage to six at 30-24, but over the final three minutes of the period, the Blazers went on a 12-2 run to take a 42-26 lead into the locker room at the break.

"I thought we fought hard, but we had about a four-minute period in that second quarter where we went from back-and-forth to down 16," said head coach Scott Groninger. "They simply outworked us there during that time."

In the third quarter, the Blazers outscored West Georgia 19-12 to take a 61-38 lead into the final quarter. In that one, the Wolves outscored VSU 19-18, but couldn't muster a comeback in the end.

West Georgia completes the season with a 9-15 record overall and a 6-13 mark against Gulf South Conference competition.
