CLEVELAND, Tenn. – In the end the upset bid fell short, but the UWG women's basketball team went toe-to-toe with the 19
th-ranked Lee Lady Flames on Wednesday night, falling 76-55 in Gulf South Conference action.
After a red-hot start and a halftime lead, the script would flip as the Wolves (8-11, 5-9 GSC) struggled in the second half, shooting 7-of-35 in the final two quarters.
The opening half featured 10 lead changes alone as the Wolves and Lady Flames (18-3, 10-2 GSC) battled it out. The Wolves led by as much as five points early in the contest, with Lee's largest lead of four coming midway through the second quarter.
West Georgia went 2-for-11 from the three-point line in the opening half, but finished the first 20 minutes 16-of-32 from the field.
Jaylin Austin was key in the opening half scoring eight points in the half and was fueled by
Tahya Campbell's distribution as the graduate student dished out six assists in the half.
Coming out of the break, UWG went cold from the field, shooting just 2-of-10 for the period. Meanwhile, the Lady Flames heated up, and opened the second half on a 22-1 run, and finished the period outscoring UWG, 25-7.
The Lee lead stayed in double-figures for the remainder of the contest as the Flames won their eighth-straight game and 10
th consecutive GSC game.
Austin finished with 12 points to lead the Wolves, while
Siera Carter chipped in with 11. Campbell had seven rebounds and seven assists in the loss, while
Valencia Carroll also had seven rebounds.
Lee was led by a game-high 18 from Haley Schubert and had four total players in double-figures.
The Wolves are back in action on Saturday as UWG travels to Livingston, Alabama for a 3 p.m. tip-off at West Alabama
