MOBILE, Ala. - Three second half goals propelled the University of West Georgia soccer team to a 2-0 start to Gulf South Conference play, as the Wolves defeated Spring Hill on the road on Friday afternoon.
It was the third straight shutout for the Wolves, as Haley Brinkman and the UWG defense recorded another clean sheet on the season.
Although it was scoreless after 45 minutes, it was all West Georgia in the first half, as the Wolves (4-2) dominated every offensive category. West Georgia would finish the half with five shots compared to just one from the Badgers (0-5-1).
In the second half, the Wolves came out swinging. After an offside call wiped the potential first goal off the boards, freshman
Catherine Reeves found the back of the net for the second time this season to put the Wolves up 1-0 in the 66th minute.
Just six minutes of game time passed before the Wolves scored again, this time coming from the foot of
Sarah Harrell in the 72nd minute, which was her first goal and points of the season.
Lauren O'Neill added a point as she assisted on Harrell's goal.
In the 76th minute,
Jade Butcher, who had her goal wiped off the board early in the second half, made up for it by scoring once again, to push the West Georgia advantage to 3-0, which would hold until the final whistle.
West Georgia finished the match with 13 shots, and eight were on target, compared to just one shot from the Badgers. The Wolves were also awarded with 14 corner kicks, which is a season high.
The Wolves will now turn their attention to West Florida, as they take on the Argonauts on Sunday afternoon at 1p.m. from Pensacola, Florida.
