Wolves Sweep Tigers to Extend Winning Streak to Four

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The University of West Georgia Volleyball team extended their winning streak to four, after sweeping the West Alabama Tigers on Friday night.

"It was nice to come home after a long road trip and defend our home court tonight," said head coach Kara Hellmann.

West Georgia's defense stole the show against West Alabama as the Wolves held the Tigers to a .057 hitting percentage, leading to a clean 3-0 win for UWG, extending their set win streak to 12.

The first set was tight to begin as the Wolves held an 8-7 lead before West Georgia broke the game wide open courtesy of a massive 8-0 run that gave UWG a 16-7 lead. Falling down by nine in a blink of an eye, UWA didn't lay down and fought back to cut the Wolves' lead to four after a 10-5 run. A kill from Zoë LaBreche put an end to the Tigers' run as the senior sparked a 4-1 run for West Georgia to win the set, 25-18.

West Alabama got off to a very fast start in the second set as the Tigers took a 10-4 lead to begin. UWG started to find their offensive rhythm but couldn't get within four points of UWA until back-to-back errors from West Alabama ignited an 11-1 West Georgia run, giving the Wolves a 21-16 lead late. The Tigers responded by scoring five of the next six points, cutting UWG's lead to one before a kill from LaBreche and back-to-back blocks from Caitlin Frazee and Sanai Young clinched the set for the Wolves, 25-21.

Looking to win their 12th consecutive set, West Georgia controlled the third set from start to finish, beginning by taking an 11-7 lead. A kill from West Alabama's Kaida Alvin brought UWA within three before UWG went on a colossal 10-3 run, putting the set out of reach at 21-11. The Tigers went on to score points here and there, but the Wolves cruised to a 25-15 set win.

Young led the way with 10 kills on a season-high .714 hitting percentage and seven blocks, while LaBreche recorded 11 kills and 10 digs.

"I'm proud of this team for their effort tonight and we look forward to tomorrow's matchup with Mississippi College," Hellmann concluded.

West Georgia will end their weekend with their Dig Pink match against Mississippi College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The first 100 attendees will receive free 'Dig Pink' t-shirts.
