CARROLLTON, Ga. – The University of West Georgia Volleyball team dropped their first match in over two weeks after a 3-1 loss to the Mississippi College Choctaws on Saturday.
"I'm proud of this team, but we know that we didn't have our best stuff today," said head coach Kara Hellmann.
The team stats were nearly even in every category except for the service game as MC (8-9, 7-3 GSC) recorded 11 aces to UWG's (11-7, 5-4 GSC) five, while the Wolves committed 12 service errors.
West Georgia got out to a 11-8 lead in the first set after back-to-back kills from Sanai Young. Shortly after, the Choctaws took control of the set, by using an 8-2 run to take a 16-13 lead. The Wolves scored the next two points but that would be as close as they would get in the set as MC went on to win, 25-22.
Mississippi College started fast in the second set as they held a 9-5 lead to begin before a kill from Cailtin Frazee sparked an 8-1 run, giving UWG a 13-10 lead. The Choctaws quickly responded by scoring the next three points to tie the game at 13. The two teams then traded points, with Mississippi College holding a slight advantage at 21-20. A MC service error and a block from Frazee and Young kept UWG right there with the Choctaws until a block from Mississippi College's Sloane FitzHenry won the set, 25-22 for MC.
Much like the first set, West Georgia raced out to an 11-8 lead in the third set after back-to-back kills from Zoë LaBreche. Moments later, the Choctaws used a 4-0 run to take a 12-11 lead until the Wolves countered with a 6-1 run to retake the lead at 17-13 and force a MC timeout. Out of the break, Mississippi College scored four straight points to tie the set at 17 before Sarah Pipping and Taylor Allen carried a 3-0 run to put West Georgia back up by three. For the rest of the set, the two GSC teams went back-and-forth, with a Kelli Kaiser ace winning the set, 27-25 for UWG.
The Wolves had all of the momentum after winning a thrilling third set and marched out to a 13-7 lead in the fourth. Mississippi College responded with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 13 before taking a 18-15 lead after kills from Caroline Chastang and Julia Sumrall. An error from Chastang halted the Choctaws momentum momentarily before MC rattled off seven of the next nine points to win the set, 25-18.
LaBreche led the way with 16 kills and 12 digs while Desha Van Veldhuizen dished out 45 assists.
West Georgia will be back in action next weekend in Orlando, Florida for the SSC-GSC Crossover with opponents and times to be named.
