ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of West Georgia Volleyball team dropped matches to Rollins College and Embry-Riddle on Day one of the SSC-GSC Crossover.
UWG (11-9, 5-4 GSC) played two high powered offenses in day one and got outhit in both matches, leading to their two losses against Rollins (12-9, 5-6 SSC) and Embry-Riddle (14-6, 6-4 SSC).
Match one vs Rollins:
West Georgia got out to a quick start in set one, by taking a 9-5 lead before an 8-3 Rollins run gave the Tars a 13-12 lead. The Wolves responded by scoring five of the next seven points to retake the lead at 17-15 which forced Rollins to burn their first timeout. Out of the break, Rollins used a 7-3 run to take a 22-20 lead until
Sarah Pipping completely took over the set as the sophomore recorded four straight kills to carry a 5-0 UWG run, clinching the set 25-23 for West Georgia.
Much like set one, set two was very competitive as Rollins held a 10-8 lead to begin before four straight points from Zoe LaBreche gave the Wolves the lead at 12-10. The two teams then traded points, with a kill and a block from
Caitlin Frazee giving UWG a 16-14 advantage. The Tars responded with a 4-0 run right before West Georgia countered with a 3-0 run that gave the Wolves a one-point lead. Down by one, Rollins went on a 7-3 run to close out the set, 25-22.
UWG held a 4-3 lead in set three but that lead wouldn't last long as Rollins scored eight of the next ten points to take a 11-6 lead. A couple of attack errors from the Tars and blocks and kills from Frazee and
Marley Staats kept the Wolves in the game deep into the set before Rollins used another 8-2 run to win the set, 25-28.
West Georgia could never get out of first gear in set four as UWG fell behind 16-4 to start. Frazee, Staats, and Pipping kept the Wolves alive, but Rollins went on to take the set 25-11.
Pipping recorded a team-high 12 kills while
Taylor Allen accumulated a team-high six blocks.
Match two vs Embry-Riddle:
West Georgia fell behind 10-7 to begin before a kill from Pipping sparked a 6-3 UWG that tied the game at 13. The two teams traded points for the remainder of the set, with the Eagles edging out a 25-20 set win.
The second set was competitive from start to finish as the score was knotted at eight to start. Moments later, Embry-Riddle used a 5-0 run to take a 13-8 lead until the Wolves countered with a massive 11-3 run, that was capped off by a kill from Staats, to take a 19-16 lead late. UWG pushed their lead to 23-21, but wasn't able to close as Embry-Riddle went on to win a back-and-forth set, 28-26.
After winning a competitive second set, the Eagles had all of the momentum and used it to take a 15-5 lead to begin the third. A couple of scores later, Embry-Riddle held a 22-9 lead but West Georgia had zero quit in them and went on a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to six. Needing just one more point to close out the day, Embry-Riddle's Isabella Rujano put down a kill to win the set for the Eagles, 25-18.
Young led the Wolves with eight kills on a .333 hitting percentage, while Pipping also recorded eight kills.
West Georgia will conclude the Crossover on Saturday after a 2:30 p.m. contest against Lynn University.
