CARROLLTON, Ga. - A 1-1 draw and a friendly result in the league made for a positive Friday night as the West Georgia Wolves punched their ticket to the Gulf South Conference Tournament.
The Wolves tangled with Valdosta State with the winner getting the right to play on their home field in the GSC quarterfinals. And while the 1-1 draw prevented that from happening, the Wolves did clinch a spot in the tournament for the third straight season.
West Georgia and Valdosta State played a scoreless first half with neither team putting a shot on target. Jade Butcher gave the Wolves a legit chance on a free kick right outside of the box in the early portion of the game, but the shot sailed just over the bar.
In the second half, sophomore Kenna Kay scored a heart-stopping goal in the 63rd minute. Kay had a one-on-one defense against the VSU goalkeeper and that resulted in the lone goal of the match for the Wolves
Ten minutes later the Blazers tied up the score, resulting in a back and forth battle until the clock finally ran out.
The Wolves fought hard offensively, having 10 total shots with six second half shots on frame. Senior goalkeeper Haley Brinkman made two saves in the match.
West Georgia now waits on final results across the league on Sunday to determine their opening round matchup. The first round is tentatively set for Saturday, November 4.
