Wolves End Weekend Flawless After Sweep of Bucs

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of West Georgia Volleyball team completed their weekend sweep on Saturday, after defeating the Christian Brothers Buccaneers, 3-0 in Memphis.

West Georgia's (10-6, 4-3 GSC) offense was firing on all cylinders once again as the Wolves put down 42 kills on a .301 hitting percentage, propelling them to their third straight win.

"So proud of this group," said Kara Hellmann. "This was a gritty win for our team. We battled through some adversity, weren't playing our sharpest game but we found ways to execute and come out on top in a tough environment."

West Georgia got off to a fast start in set one after a block from Claire Conway and Zoë LaBreche gave UWG a 10-5 lead to begin. Up five early, the Wolves created even more separation from the Bucs as a 9-3 West Georgia run extended their lead to 19-9, forcing a CBU timeout. Out of the break, Christian Brothers woke up as the Bucs used an 8-3 run to cut the Wolves lead to 23-18. Unrattled by CBU's run, UWG finished off the set thanks to a kill from Sanai Young and a block from Young and Caitlin Frazee.

Christian Brothers took a 10-8 lead to begin the second set before a Frazee kill sparked a mini 4-1 run for West Georgia, giving them a 12-11 lead. The Bucs quickly responded, by going on a 5-1 run to retake the lead and force a Wolves' timeout. Out of the break, Claire Conway scored back-to-back points that catapulted a 8-3 UWG run that gave West Georgia the lead back at 21-19. Moments later, the Bucs worked to tie the set before another kill from Conway won the set, 25-22 for UWG.

Christian Brothers blitzed West Georgia in the third set, by taking a 10-4 lead to start. After the fast CBU start, UWG settled down and went on a 6-0 run, that was capped off by a service ace from Frazee, to cut the deficit to one. The Bucs scored the next three points to take a 14-10 lead before back-to-back kills from Desha Van Veldhuizen ignited a 9-3 West Georgia run that gave the Wolves a 19-17 lead late. The trading of runs continued as Christian Brothers used a 6-2 run to take a 23-21 advantage late. Trying to complete back-to-back sweeps, freshman Allison Bowser put down back-to-back kills to tie the match at 23, shifting the momentum, before Conway and LaBreche finished off the Bucs to complete the weekend sweep.

Sarah Pipping led the way with 11 kills on a .409 hitting percentage while Frazee and LaBreche both recorded eight kills.

"We are looking forward to bringing this momentum back to Carrollton," Hellmann ended.

West Georgia will make their return to The Coliseum next weekend, beginning with a 6:00 p.m. matchup against West Alabama on Friday.
