Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Darrell Redden Jr.

11th Ranked Wolves Get Past Argos to Move to 9-0

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Georgia Men's Basketball team kept their perfect record in tact on Sunday, moving to 9-0 on the season after an 82-77 win against the West Florida Argonauts.

West Georgia (9-0, 5-0 GSC) had another phenomenal night on the offensive side of the ball as the Wolves shot 54.4% from the field while holding West Florida (3-6, 1-4 GSC) to 38.8%, which led to their ninth consecutive win to begin the year.

"All of them aren't going to be easy," said head coach Dave Moore. "I told them that in the locker room and to West Florida's credit, they really did a nice job in the last 10 minutes of making shots. We faced some adversity at the end of the game but we were able to make enough plays and we came together. It was good experience, a good road win, and we'll take 9-0."

Although UWG ended up having a great night on the offensive side of the ball, they got off to a bit of a slow start but clamped down on the defensive side of the ball, leading to a 7-2 lead five minutes in. Amari Davis dominated the first half and recorded six points and five rebounds in those five minutes, giving the Wolves that early jolt that they needed. While Davis got West Georgia going, Zawdie Jackson carried UWG for the rest of the first half. West Florida's guards struggled to keep Jackson in front of them as the junior got a plethora of paint touches, leading to easy backets for himself and Davis. The duo of Jackson and Davis combined for 26 points in the half, propelling the Wolves to a 39-29 lead at the break.

"Amari was urgent tonight," coach Moore continued. "He really worked hard in there and battled. We knew that we were going to need him because West Florida is big inside."

While Jackson and Davis carried West Georgia offensively in the half, the Wolves defense completely stifled the Argonauts as West Florida shot 29.4% from the field and 25% from three in the period.

The beginning of the second half mirrored the first half as UWG quickly extended their lead to 15 after a three from Cole Fisher. West Georgia kept their distance from West Florida, with Camron Donatlan catching fire, by hitting back-to-back step back jumpers to give the Wolves their largest lead of the game at 65-46. Moments later, UWG held a comfortable lead at 74-57 with 5:50 left to play until the game completely flipped as the Argonauts buried a barrage of threes, leading to an 11-0 run that cut West Georgia's lead to six with 2:46 left. West Florida continued to chip away at West Georgia's lead, getting it down to four points before Jackson put the game away at the free throw line.

Donatlan finished with a game-high 22 points on 7-11 shooting and 3-7 from three, while Jackson recorded 19 points and seven assists. Davis also registered a career-high 15 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.

"We've got to tighten up, go look at the film, and learn from it," coach Moore added. "Hopefully we can use it as a good learning experience and be able to move forward and finish this thing the right way before the Holiday break."

West Georgia will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Montevallo, Alabama for a GSC matchup against the Montevallo Falcons at 8:30 p.m. EST.
