HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of West Georgia Men's basketball team dropped their second game of the season on Saturday afternoon after a 93-82 loss to Alabama Huntsville.
The first 40 minutes of the game were as tight as can be as the largest lead either team held was six points, resulting in the game heading into overtime where UWG (9-2, 5-2 GSC) shot 1-10 from field, which led UAH (9-3, 7-1 GSC) to an 11-point win.
"Disappointed that we loss but that was a great college basketball game," said head coach
Dave Moore. "I thought the first 40 minutes was a really good game on both sides. Alabama Huntsville's bench was a huge factor in the game. Isaac Chatman comes in and hits three threes, that hurts us. Matthew Thurman hits two threes, that hurts us."
As expected the first half between these two teams was very competitive, beginning with UWG taking an early 14-12 lead behind three three-pointers from
Kolten Griffin just five minutes in.
Cole Fisher joined in on Griffin's three-point party with a three of his own to extend the Wolves lead to 17-12. Five points would be the largest lead West Georgia would hold in the period as the two GSC teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the half, resulting in a 42-41 lead at the break for the Wolves.
West Georgia shot 44.4% from the field and 40% from three in the first half while Alabama Huntsville shot 48.4% from the floor and 43.8% from three.
The second half was equally as tight as the first as the game saw six lead changes in the first five and a half minutes. With the game tied at 55, Jackson scored four straight points to give the Wolves a four-point advantage until a 6-0 run from Alabama Huntsville gave the Chargers a 60-59 lead with 10:41 left to play. Lead changes continued to be a theme of the second half as Jackson hit a huge mid-range jump shot with 51 seconds left to put West Georgia up one. UAH's Tommy Murr countered Jackson's go-ahead layup with a massive three-point play, giving the Chargers a 79-77 lead with 35 seconds left to play before Jackson came back down and scored a layup to send the game to overtimewith the score knotted at 79.
In overtime, UWG struggled to score as Alabama Huntsville Chargers outscored the Wolves 14-3, leading to a 92-83 defeat for West Georgia.
Jackson led the way with 22 points and eight assists, while Griffin recorded a UWG career-high 17 points and six rebounds.
"I thought we took quality shots in that overtime period but couldn't get them to fall," coach Moore continued. "For the game we shot 28% from three and we're not going to beat Alabama Huntsville shooting 28% from three especially when you give up 92 points."
West Georgia will be back in action on Tuesday when they return home to The Coliseum for a GSC matchup against West Alabama.
