Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Darrell Redden Jr.

24th Ranked Wolves Dominate Tigers at Home for 10th win of Season

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia Men's Basketball team got back in the win column on Tuesday night after a dominating 91-65 win over the West Alabama Tigers.

UWG (10-2, 6-2 GSC) was stout on the defensive end, holding West Alabama (9-3, 6-2 GSC) to a season-low 29.3% from the field and 28% from three, and then used an explosive offensive second half to propel themselves over UWA for their 10th win of the season and first victory over the Tigers in over five years.

"I just told the team in the locker room how proud of them I am and that's how a really good team responds to adversity," said head coach Dave Moore. "Our guys had two really good days of practice. They put their head down, they worked, they stayed together and that's what we need to do. If we stay together and continue to play hard, we'll have nights like tonight."

West Georgia got off to a slow start offensively as they began the game 0-7 from the field, leading to a 11-0 lead for West Alabama nearly five minutes in. Kolten Griffin finally got the Wolves on the board at the 15:10 mark with a pair of free throws which also sparked a 15-2 UWG run that gave West Georgia their first lead of the game. Free throws were the theme of the rest of the half as the Wolves shot 19-20 from the charity stripe while the Tigers shot 7-11, propelling UWG to a 35-31 lead at the break.

While West Georgia lived at the free throw line in the first half, they struggled from the field, shooting 29.2% but held West Alabama to 28.6% in a defensive filled 20 minutes.

UWG was the definition of clinical in the second half as they out-scored UWA by 22 points in the period and shot 66.7% from the field. It began with both teams trading baskets, leading to a 43-41 lead for the Wolves, four minutes in. A Zawdie Jackson jumper ignited an 11-0 run, extending West Georgia's lead to 13 with 13:01 left to play. UWG continued to put their foot on the gas as buckets from Marlon Smith, Camron Donatlan, and Griffin put the Wolves up 63-45 with 9:05 remaining, before they took their largest lead of the night at 86-60. With 1:44 left to play, Coach Moore pulled his starters as West Georgia cruised to a 91-65 win.

Jackson led the way with a game-high 26 points and four assists while Griffin recorded a UWG career-high 18 points and seven rebounds.

Donatlan also stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

"Kolten Griffin gets 18 and 7 and Zawdie goes for 26, we're not going to lose too many nights," coach Moore continued. "It's not just about our scoring, its about the defense. 29% field goal defense and 28% from three against a really good basketball team. I'm just really proud of them."

West Georgia will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Rome, Georgia for a matchup against the Shorter Hawks.
